The dunes have names? But don't they shift and move around? Are some so big that they are permanent?
The dunes in the Sossusvlei region of the Namib desert are “star dunes” so named for their shape. Winds cycle from different directions so, while the shape of the ridges may change back and forth, the dune overall does not move. Dune 45, Big Daddy and Big Mama have maintained their position for hundreds of years.
