37M High Functioning Autistic from the New York City (NY) Area

Hi,

Brief introduction about myself. I consider myself a high functioning autistic, I was diagnosed as being on the spectrum when I was young. I had since developed my abilities to socialize and articulate myself in ways I struggled in the past, as most of you might have as well. I would say I'm living a fairly normal social life, I have my group of circle and friends, and while it can take some effort from me, I am generally considered normal in a public setting.

I have about 10 years of experience in a professional setting in the tech industry, and it has been a challenge as well to be in a strong social environment in the corporate world with my diagnosis. While there are more talented and intellectuals out there than me, I been told that I am quite talented and gifted, which is probably part of the attribution to me being in the spectrum.

I am hoping to meet some people around here who share my type of background, as there are only few of us out there, ideally someone in the New York (NY) area and potentially meet in person. Feel free to send me a PM. Thanks!

welcome to af.webp

Thanks for the intro. There are some very tech savy forum members here, and then you have very authentic members that bring so much creativity and originality to this forum. Any advice re: careers is very helpful for others struggling here with their social and professional skills, so look forward to your posts. Oh yes, welcome.

Welcome. Go to AANE.org website. They're based in that area and have face to face meetups, zoom groups, etc.

There's a member of another autism forum that lives in NYC from what I recall and she's set up face to face meetings before and I assume still does. However, if you're a cis white male, at least in the past she's purposely excluded that group of people and that group alone. I don't know if you're situation would exclude you for that reason or not.

Probably best to stick with AANE.org which is inclusive to anyone and everyone.

Hello and welcome!

I hope you enjoy your time here on the forum. Let us know if you need any help figuring things out.

Welcome! I can't vouch for anyone being near you, but there are plenty of tech threads happening around these parts (with lots of community participation!) which is a plus!

I’m not in the NY area, but Meetup and AANE have been helpful for me as well.

I agree that it is very difficult to find extroverted and socially high-functioning autistic adults, but I am one of them lol
