Imperfectly Perfect
In the interest of continuing to plod along, I finally made the call to Pennsylvania's Office of Vocational Rehabilitation for an initial telephone screen. Preliminarily, I qualify for some state assistance so an application will be mailed out to me. I feel ****** for using this service because I'm all about making it on my own but I guess there is strength in knowing when to ask for help. I'm human and error prone and used to look down on people using these assistance services as gaming the system. Sure there are some that do, but most are earnest and the councilor I spoke with was wonderfully understanding, positive, and encouraging. I told her that I desperately want to be a productive member of society and she said, "With our help and your hard work, we can make it happen." Earlier I wrote that I felt being an adult was better than being a child and boy was I wrong. Being an adult is tough work.

Yep. Wait until the status of your health catches up with your age. At 37 you aren't quite "there" yet.

That point in time when you have your first "senior moment" and discover talking/complaining about your declining health....that you sound just like one of those "old persons" !

I enjoyed my childhood so much that I'm doing it again, personally. :)

But I am sorry to hear about your troubles. You're exactly right - there are those who DO take advantage and cheat the system, and they give all the honest folks who genuinely need the assistance a bad name. It's like violent extremists (of religion, politics, anything) - they're awful and infamous and give the honest followers a bad name. The fact that you're actively trying to be productive should completely void any worry you have about being a leech, or a cheat. Those programs are important - without them, many people WOULD be forced to turn to dishonest means (stealing, scamming, robbery, etc).

Everyone in a specialized economy relies on someone else for everything from the basics of survival to the products they need to complete their work. Unless you become a subsistence farmer or a hunter-gatherer, you will never be "making it on your own." Heck, even the latter survive with the aid of the rest of the family/tribe. Don't let the myth of economic self-sufficiency mess with your head.
