  • My "new" Harbor Freight generator needs a fuel filter after just 50 hours of runtime. Of course, buying something from HF means that you get the cheapest possible, but darn. I just hope the piston rings haven't gone bad.
My right shoulder hurts due to pulling small engine smart cords so much. Resting it for now.

There are spring starters available online for most small engines. You wind them up with a crank & then release by pressing a button which turns the motor over until it starts. Would something like that help?

That's not the issue, I'm trying to repair two small power generators so I was pulling and pulling cords more than normal.
Cheap generator refused to start after routine maintenance. I am actually doing surprisingly well without air conditioning. Fans and a small swamp cooler. It helps that outside temps are not extreme.
I fell back into my sugar addiction recently so yesterday I threw out the chocolate and started to detox. I am really sick this morning. No pain no gain.

That sucks! I don't keep any chocolate in house, it's easier for me
Checked the oak trees today. Acorns should be ready to harvest in 2-4 weeks. I bought an extra long grabbing tool to get more acorns.
My old Cummins generator apparently cracked the engine block and when I undid the dipstick (screw in) to drain the oil a gallon of fuel gushed out.

Nope. I'm gonna get rid of it as scrap metal.

You could save the dynamo & other stuff & put a new engine on it. Doesn't have to be a diesel; could be a good gasolene engine.

It's such a cheap generator there's no point. It's a gasoline engine and I have come to suspect that's it's just another cheap China made generator with the Cummins name slapped on. When I bought it I thought it was a real Cummins engine.
I bought an old 1980s-era Honda EM1600 generator from a guy in Grants Pass for $180. I might use that one for extreme heat waves.
Had to bite the bullet and go to Harbor Freight which is a US store that sells very cheap tools and buy a generator, since both of mine died. I'm hoping the cheap generator will last til fall when it starts getting colder.
has not had any good sleep for days due to the heat. My generator needs a spark plug (and an oil change) and the auto parts store doesn't open for another 8 hours.
I hope the smoke doesn't activate the carbon monoxide shutoff circuitry in my generator. Generators can be hard to start in smoke due to companies trying to head off lawsuits by stupid people insisting on running them indoors.

You should be able to get around that if you can rig up a decent air filter for it, smoke is more fine particles than gas.

Turns out that the generator started right up. By midday the smoke had thinned enough so that there was no problem.
There is a huge wildfire in the far southwestern part of Siskiyou County, in mainly unpopulated forestlands. There is 20mph wind blowing the smoke towards Yreka and well beyond.

I had my window open all night without knowing about the smoke. I woke up sick.
The acorns are still green but coming along. I'll go back out to where the oak trees are in two weeks and check them again.
My Cummins generator froze up this afternoon. Fortunately I have a backup for now. I wish there were heat pumps for tiny homes.
I was telling the clerks who run the jury assembly room about my excuse and they were perusing my letter when the actual jury commissioner walked in. She talked to the room clerks, asked me a couple questions, and said I was free to go. She did say I should bring the formal letter when I get it.
I have to report in person to the Siskiyou County Courthouse tomorrow for jury duty. My psychiatrist is on vacation so she can't sign an excuse letter that the jury commissioner will accept. I have a draft on her letterhead done by her assistant. I will show that to the judge and hope for the best.

If the letter isn't signed and sent via US Mail the commissioner won't accept it. I was emailed a draft.

I only ever got called up once, I wrote to the Clerk Of The Court and told them that my previous criminal history should preclude me from jury duty. That got me off. My criminal history - minor possess hemp when I was 18. :)
I find it bizarre that bubbly, happy teenage girls die horribly from cancer by 18, yet those who would welcome an early, natural death have to either live long, healthy lives or make a noose from a belt and hope it works as intended.
I found a place to collect acorns too. Acorns have to "cure" over the winter though.

After they are cured are the acorns for eating?

Yes. The acorns have to be shelled, then the nutmeat is smashed into a powder (pre-colonization this was done with mortar and pestle, today it's with a blender) then the powder is mixed with water and boiled until the bitter "tannin" is leached out.
