Missing parts, old obsolete coins, and the Uniteu States

The one cent US "penny" has been thin copper leaf over zinc, I think, since 1982. Still, it costs 4 cents per coin to mint. America's five cent coin, the "nickel", also costs slightly more to mint than face value, but getting rid of it would be far more difficult. Somewhere I have some...

Missing parts, old obsolete coins, and the Uniteu States

That reminds me of the American colonization of California. The draw was gold. The currency in a lot of areas was gold dust, or small aggregated flakes of gold. Miners would carry a leather satchel of gold dust, and items were bought via "pinches" of dust. Men with large fingers were highly...

Missing parts, old obsolete coins, and the Uniteu States

The 2025 American one cent coin could become valuable if current orders to stop minting after 2025 go through. I am thinking of buying a "proof set" of 2025 USA coinage from the US Mint in anticipation of the elimination of the one cent coin. Apparently bags of 2025 one cents are going for quite...

    World Spinning Weirdly

I personally do follow the news using apps on my phone, mainly Yahoo News and Google News which are good aggregators. I like to try to listen to the news on radio but the closest all news station is in San Francisco (KCBS-AM, 740 khz) and it can be hard to receive here due to interference from...

    Fire Safety Warning!

Near me is the wreckage of somebody's RV. People out here tend to live off grid and out of the range of "civilization" but that carries risk, including the lack of fire suppression services. Cal Fire has a station in Hornbrook proper next to the freeway that is mainly there to protect the town...

Gonna plant potatoes this year. Did some googling, root veggies do well in volcanic soil, but the layer of clay 8 inches down complicates things. May try lettuce too.

Did a huge Walmart food run yesterday (19 April). $375. A lot of canned food since I have no way to keep food cold. I intend on trying meat salting this summer.

The classics aren't introduced to the young anymore, in fact kids have trouble with anything longer than a few paragraphs, likely due to the focus on "reading comprehension" for testing. In depth reading of great literature has almost disappeared.

Yeah, I remember being driven around Silicon Valley with a classmate from HS and his GF, who were attending Santa Clara University, and this song came on Wild 107.7. They laughed and said "this is sure [oregano]'s song, ain't it?" It was true to the point I was laughing at myself.

Salt Lake City is relatively non-Mormon. The place you want to go with your flag is Provo. 90% LDS. If you are really brave head to some of the suburbs outside Provo. That said, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, may be closer to where you are and maybe even more appropriate.

Hey, I feel the same way. I am a de facto hermit right now, living in a place where nobody even knows or cares that I exist. It is actually quite liberating.
