    Autism Diagnosis Pros vs Cons.

It has been a relief for me to have my diagnosis 4 years ago at age 34. To know that I do not have to try harder to be like everybody else. That I can just be who I am :) I’m fine with the labels: ASD Aspergers Autism Aspie anything like that. I don’t see it as a label so much as a starting...

    my psychologist

Are you living in England? In England there are support services provided by local authorities, and you may be able to get help from them with getting a good counsellor.

    Critical thinking

The discussion on this topic is deep and philosophical. Reading through it has been enjoyable, if at times beyond my ability to understand. I did want to add some thoughts that I think havn’t been raise yet: I enjoy examining an issue and getting more information on it, whether or not this new...

    Empathy

I think this is a big topic, with a lot of it coming down to the relationship you have with the other person. I have a new manager at work, and have regular 1:1 meetings with them. I get his take on things emotionally as well as intellectually. He is very straight talking, and doesn’t use a...

Is the root of shutdown and meltdown just anxiety?

For me it’s Anxiety + overstimulus = shutdown It’s like a fuse blowing. I find my functioning is less for some time afterward. I usually go back to researching special interests and in that way usually find my way back to reality.

    Friends

Have you heard the rubbish other people can spend ages talking about, clothes, celebrities, sport? Most of what they say is not really about exchanging information but just spending time with each other. That stuff drives me crazy and is the worst part about friendships. It's very draining to...

    Friends

Without friends I would - go to work - come home - and sleep, Those would be the most significant aspects of my life. With friends I can - discuss a thought or idea I've had - be there for them when I have something to offer, when they want to discuss something, or it's an activity I can help...

Is Asperger's a learning disability? Yes or no?

I agree the idea of being thought of as a liability is quite offensive to me, as it's a judgement others would be making about me and my worth. But...am I liable to make social mistakes? You betcha! Back to the original question. For me Aspergers is not something I'd see as a learning...

Do Aspies have low emotional intelligence (EQ)?

To take someone's opinion with a grain of salt means if you can't make any sense of it, dismiss it and move things on to something else more productive.

    Communal Seating

I avoid using the communal seats if I can, but I will use them if it's unavoidable. It's normally not that bad when I do, as it seems almost everyone avoids sitting next to / or opposite someone else if they can. I can even get a nice sense of gaining space when the other people leave. I...

Help Me! Maid of Honor for Friend on the Spectrum

I wonder do you know why she picked you for maid of honour? Was it that she saw you as fulfilling the role well and could be relied upon? It may be she doesn't easily see how that has changed. She may have in her head assigned a role to you and expect you to fulfill it. This likely didn't...

    How NTs respond to you

During my counselling session today I mentioned that when I ask an NT something their response appears to me to be in one of two ways: 1. They respond to what I have asked directly, or they attempt to understand what I have asked Or 2. They believe I am asking the wrong question or am seeing...
