    Autistic Girlfriend, I am depressed

People with ASD tend to handle social interactions using memorized rules rather than intuition. You stated that she believes that "BF and GF are not supposed to communicate, that's for friends." This is an obviously incorrect rule that she has. I'd start with talking to her about why she...

    Learning how to ask/accept help

You could try letting him practice asking for help with you. It's safer to try new situations with parents than with anyone else. For example, you give him an easy problem to solve, then have him pretend to need help and ask. This also may feel safe because he doesn't really need the help, so...

    Other Neurological Disorders? Normal MRI?

It's all about the current limits of MRI technology. We just can't see the individual brain circuits in enough detail to determine which ones aren't working right. I in the next 10 or 20 years we will have more sensitive techniques but we aren't there yet.

Apergers medications and other mental conditions

They can't lock you up against your will unless you are an immediate danger to yourself or others. Beyond that, remember your doctor is there to help you -- the more you tell him, the more he can help.

    School/Employment and Studying

When you say that you missed a lot of grade school, does that mean you don't have a high school diploma? If you don't have one and want more education, I'd start with getting a high school equivalency. Since you are interested in plants, what about working in a plant store or as a gardener?

    Help with Referral Form

Ok, sorry for my bad advice then. I now see where you said that in your original email. Yes it's confusing.

    Help with Referral Form

The doctor has already filled out the form for you. The slashes mean that nothing goes in the box.

Those of you with young children, some advice please

The over-the-ear headphones made for shooters work better than the earplugs and are more comfortable. Also a lot cheaper than the Bose headphones.

How long did it take for you to accept you were autistic?

I think mind blindness and theory of mind are unfortunate terms. My daughter does not seem mind blind to me. Rather she seems to process emotional information differently from NTs. She does have trouble understanding what she is feeling or picking up the social cues from others.

Aspergers Jokes? Communication enablers or beyond the pale?

I think this article on "Neurotypical Syndrome" is very funny and also helps NTs see how life looks to Aspies http://www.thestonkingsteps.com/thoughts-on-autism/neurotypical-syndrome-a-live-long-disorder/

    Afraid of being bulldozed...again.

The IEP process can be challenging and schools often resist parent requests for IEPs because special education services are so expensive. If you are having trouble with the school, look for an educational advocate experience in working with your school district. Advocates are not cheap, so if...

    ABA Therapy?

Toothless' experience sounds like bad ABA. My daughter is in ABA now, and I would never allow her to be treated that way, and I am so sorry you went through that. Our behavioral therapy is more focused on important life skills - doing homework, performing self-care, communicating basic needs...

    Help with socializing?

Listening and asking questions is good. Also keep up with current events, sports, the weather. If the conversation slows down, mention something you read about or saw on TV.

    Food issues

My Aspie daughter has celiac disease, so no gluten for her. She had stomach aches every night for a long until we got the diagnosis and cut out the gluten.
