Mental Models - Limiting more than Guiding Me At The Moment

I think my mental model is still limited to the East, despite much exposure to other cultures here on AC. We still have implicit gender discrimination in Asia, though we try to empower ladies. Men go on to become politicians, Court-appointed judges and Directors of hospital departments, all at the expense of, well, females.

The pro-conscription culture in Singapore, in which only males serve the armed forces for 2 years while women don't, further reinforce this concept 'only men do great things'.

As the males in my clan had not been doing as well as the females in my generation, with the implicit slant against females, there had been strong pressure for the males in my clan to do well so that males can hold on our own against the females. As a result, I feel I'm pushed further and beyond what I could do, to do things I can't reasonably do. My clan and societal mental models act as restrictive, not encouraging, forces that influence my life.

Recognising the limitations of my mental model, I think I should put an end to my own misery, and shed some wisdom to the environment I am living in.

I may not be the smartest or most able in the clan. It could even be a fact, given the achievements of the females in my clan. So perhaps, like many forward-thinking familial structures, we should accept females as equals to males, and celebrate everybody as who we all are, regardless of educational attainment or career development.
