Common nonsense

I woke up after a 15 minute catnap, which I clearly stated to be my nemesis... I took my e-reader and read on a bit in a book I was reading.

In the book I read the following sentence; "I mean it as a compliment when I say that you could almost define a philosopher as someone who won't take common sense for an answer". Whoever knows what book this is about (without looking it up) gets a cookie... (if you want me to send a cookie all over the globe, that is)

Common sense, is defined by Merriam-Webster as; "Beliefs or propositions that most people consider prudent and of sound judgment, without reliance on esoteric knowledge or study or research, but based upon what they see as knowledge held by people "in common".

The definition by itself is faulty by asuming that, what counts for most, counts and works for everyone. I'm fine with people refering to their own thing as common sense, but leave me out of it. What common sense is to you, might not be common for me. Also, "who is most people?" What if my group of people, my friends, familiy, whatnot, have a different idea of what society should be like. Those folks are common, those are most people and they probably haven't done extensive research to back it up.

Also, does it conclude that common sense is a rambling anyone can make, because it doesn't need to have any proof, because most people are aware of it. Last week, I got in an argument on facebook, when I posted this;

"irony is drawing trees on paper".

Most people, and probably 99% would agree... actually, that's irony. But, apparently, in my friendslist on said site one person argued (and he made up 2 percent. 50 friends ;) ) " It is common knowledge that paper nowadays is made out of reed or bamboo." Oh really, is it? Even google couldn't answer me that. But apparently to him, it was common sense, that other methods of paper manufacturing were used and that this remark was not funny, And by the earlier mentioned definition, I guess asking for proof would be to "redefine" the definition. Or... actually be the philosopher, who claims that it's NOT common sense to use a dictionairy for reference on what someone means.

I wonder, that, if 99% of the people decide that the color of the sky is now teal, instead of blue... do we change the name of said color? Can we change common sense, and if so, can we change it intentional? Or would it be common sense to not change it? Can common sense be "denial of something"?

Meh... this was just something I had on my mind, when I went out for a salad 5 minutes from my place. I rather not imagine what this would've been if it were a 10 minute walk.

A final word on common sense; If it's common, why do I want it? Everyone can have something common, I rather have a rare or special sense...or a personal sense for that matter.

(but I'm not naming my own sense, the sixth sense, that's for sure)
