Wrong Planet Site

If you take a look at the members online or report a post, you will see who is there and who responds.

There is a lot of disturbing content, however. This site doesn't feel safe or "encourage open discussion".
I don't understand your point, because it's too vague.
OTOH you might need the vagueness to stay within the forum rules, which would make it ironically difficult to move forward /lol.

FWIW I didn't use a version of "fair treatment to all makes everyone dissatisfied" randomly.

It's a useful reminder that when a political or cultural debate reaches a high enough "temperature", and noisy aggressive extremists monopolize the stage, they are all (100% of them, on both sides) wrong.

This site is becoming quite right-wing too. A lot of harmful content is being tolerated and I'm slowly leaving, honestly. Moderators fail to take responsibility for what is being posted and act as if someone posting about violence is fine, but someone outraged at something sick, convoluted or harmful and outrageous is "making fuss" and silence the victims, not the perptrators. This is called "blame shifting". Maybe they see it as "woke agenda", which is defilitely right-wing. Just look how religious (often in a bad way) and conservative this site is recently

Yeah, this is pretty much how I've felt for quite awhile, though I rarely speak of it.

I dont post or interact as much as I used to, and I'm *drastically* more guarded than I was a couple of years ago.

I had gotten a lot of very good help from here, when I posted about a particularly heavy topic I was dealing with. Helped me a lot. But if my timeline had been different, and today was when I was having to confront that, there's no bloody way I'd make that topic now. Heck even just the way I'm talking here, directly naming it feels like a bad move, so I'm not going to do it. Though I think there are a few here who likely know what I'm talking about.

I'm not exactly sure what happened... I'm not good at tracking events like that... but this aint the same safe place it used to be.

The story:

There used to be a mix of conservative, centrist, and progressive members, maybe 7 years ago(?) (Don't quote me), but it wasn't harmonious, mainly because the centrists and conservatives claimed virtually all the mods were left-wing biased.

There was a mini revolution, and it was decided to add new mods and an actual admin (Alex was virtually never there).

At first, there was a belief that a more politically egalitarian structure had been created, but that didn't last.
It became clear that there was little tolerance for anything other than politically left-leaning content.
This realisation was the catalyst for the creation of a new autistic website called "Neurovoice", from memory.

Most of the conservatives and centrists left and either went to the new website or drifted off into the void.

Today, the political left has decisively claimed WP.

The END.

Golly that sounds like a lot of stuff happening.

I left WP very shortly after finding this place. WP had become... problematic. I dont mean politically. I mean just overall. It was very chaotic. A lot of explosive arguments and things like that just all the time, is what I remember.

Also the place had a LOT of trolls & bots during the time when I was frequenting it. I dont mean like, political trolls. I mean the real, old-school type that you actually dont see very often these days. I never quite figured out what made the place such a magnet for them.

Please don't leave, your input here is genuinely interesting, logical, and unique!
For my own part, I've already filtered out the small group that tends to travel in packs and turn every discussion into the same predictable thing. I'm just not interested in spending my private time reading or engaging with that anymore.
There are still plenty of reasonable and thoughtful people here, and those are the conversations that make the space worthwhile. Leaving would mostly reward the most bitter voices, and I don't think they deserve that kind of validation.

This is why I initially left here in 2023. There were also some people on here back then (who don’t seem to be active anymore) who were pretty loud about disliking me and finding me annoying, who made me feel extremely unwelcome.
A lot of my original close friends from here had left at that point too (although I still maintain regular contact with most of them outside of here.)

I was also admittedly in a really bad place mental health wise at the time, with virtually unchecked OCD and severe depression, and posted a lot of stuff myself that probably came across as combative and inflammatory, as well as a lot of stuff that was just dumb, childish and didn’t make sense. I’ve since gotten treatment and am much more stable.
I don’t waste my time arguing on here anymore. Are there still topics that piss me off? Yes. But I don’t feel much like engaging with hateful stuff anymore.
Topics like my political beliefs and my sexuality, I feel less comfortable openly discussing than maybe I did a few years ago, although it probably doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out where I land on either of those things.

I will add however that I’m pleasantly surprised by the amount of friendly, thoughtful newer members on here, and that in itself makes me less hesitant to post on here than I was before. The hateful comments do exist but on the flip side I think we’ve got a solid community of nice people who have their heads on straight.

Your perspective has always been an important, and welcome one on here, and I completely understand being put off by certain threads but I hope you’ll stay.

I mostly keep to off topic threads or lighter threads now because I’m not looking for a fight these days either lol.

I have a love hate relationship with that site.

It did help me a lot when I was on there.

I don’t know where would have been without that to express my thoughts.

I also got a bunch of good advice at the time.

A may have saved my life in in retrospective

Although there were problems, it wasn’t perfect.

I still couldn’t imagine never knowing it.

They were very political. As any of you can imagine, someone there posited something that just isn't true, per the written laws, etc. I pointed that out. POOF. I was the most hated person by about a hundred folks for at least a full week. Oh, well. I do wonder if they ever learned to accept the facts of their false claims..?

WP is dedicated to the left side of politics these days, particularly to the LGBT+ community.
There was a time it was dominated by the right, but that was a glitch and happened long ago.
I'm surprised it ever leaned right. The politics on that site was so extreme when I visited that even moderates/independent thinkers could not post anything without getting censored or attacked, all with the moderators support.

Do you have any examples? I'm genuinely curious because I haven't seen it.

I admit to calling out zealous religious stuff that (to me) hinges on going the wrong direction, and I get to questioning it, pointing out contradictions that could veer into hateful areas. If someone's religion makes them peaceful, and they display such, I have no issues.

I don't know that I have gone deep into here before, but the primary thing in my life that opened my eyes and put me on this kind of path was that I saw my entire school, close friends and even experienced personally, all issues in Marion and West Memphis, AR - 1993. I'm not going to open that can of worms here to detail further. Look it up. A lot of people know "about" it all. I lived every single second of it. To come out of that (and it was years of effect) and to not question all of what was / is supposed to be just, proper, even holy.....then I would be quite naive.

REMINDER

The topic of this thread is speculation
whether the site, WP, has shut down
permanently.

Not parsing out the presumed politics
of the place.

If anyone has certain knowledge whether
the place has only temporarily gone
offline, please direct replies to that end.

Yeah that rings a bell. the 500% rise in charges (seems awfully steep) is what Alex flagged as potentially spelling the death knell for the site. I'm not an IT person but I am know the platform architecture hasn't changed from 2005. Compared to modern social media sites, wrong planet is a snapshot of the early days of the internet. I'm kind of nostalgic for Myspace and BBS chat forums and wrong planet kind of satisfies my preferences as an interface. Most people came to wrong planet as a resource repository for autism rather than a social site. Like a dusty old book collection.

I can't prove it but the average age of regular site users has gone up. Younger folks have more options now for social media, so wrong planet kinda of resembles a retirement village.

I tried accessing the Discord site and that link also doesn't work. even if wrong planet comes back, I think many old timers wont return. But Alex and Cornflake claim it would take a nuclear war to close the site down. We shall see.

Same. I think the vast majority of members were decent folks. Support was always there for those who asked. Site was ok if you avoided threads containing controversial topics likely to trigger.
