🔧I thought that the wrench response-emoji was people calling the poster a tool/idiot.

I can understand why it could be interpreted that way. But it wouldn't exist then, if that was the intention. As this would be counter to being on a support forum.

This response is solely to indicate that a member's post has information that is useful in regards to the OP or in a general sense.

I never use social media at all so when I joined this forum and I started getting messages that someone was following me I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be flattered or nervous. :)
 
On occasion I do find it amusing when some choose to use emojis beyond the intent of their actual description. Though on occasion I've done so as well. However with a community of literal thinkers such practices may be lost in translation.

I believe it's a safe bet to assume this particular forum's use of emojis is intended only to imply positive or neutral feedback. Nothing more, nothing less.

In Australia we have a hardware (DIY) store called Total Tools. I always laugh when I see it or someone wearing one of their T-shirts.
 
I just periodically recite something my father used to tell me until it really sank in:

"Son, just make sure you find the right tool for the right job".

In that sense, a tool really can be your friend. :)
