The worst gift I ever received was from a naive grandmother who bought me a blue jacket with a large “C” in the front of it, thinking it was innocent. Then, I was 12, it was the early ‘90s, and I wanted nothing to do with the street gangs who polluted my school environment. I laughed at her thinking I would actually wear that to school.

What was the worst gift you ever received?

A Fubu shirt. I'm the whitest guy on the planet, I think my parents had a brain-fart on a Christmas shopping adventure when I was a kid. Being an undiagnosed autistic kid, I didn't really understand the magnitude of the situation. 'Mysteriously', the shirt would end up disappearing from my closet to never be seen again.

Sometimes I still try to bring it up, to have a laugh and remember the good times. They don't laugh.

Another horrible gift was when told my parents I wanted to get teriyaki take out from a local joint that put out great teriyaki at the time, but my mother insisted that we go to a crappy Chinese buffet instead where the food was very much inedible for the most part. My mother admitted that was a bit of racism on her part, as she always assumes small Asian owned businesses are just there to launder money for the Chinese mafia.

While on the subject of racist gifts, someone thought it would be funny to dress me up in a sombrero with maracas and a Mariachi mustache for *Christmas* when I was a kid.
That's obviously poking fun at Mexicans, but I'm mixed race, and South American and Portuguese lol. Not only did they mock a real culture, but it wasn't mine.

I got a few Axe deodorant gift boxes from my grandmother when she was alive. She thought I must have wanted unlimited female attention, since that was what the Axe ads promised.

I think in many cases it's a lack of imagination... or since they don't know you well, a generic gift. I know that they meant well, but what I really wanted was books, records and things to do/games. Or just money would have been good. Now for my niece, I give her money so she can get what she wants.

Well, at that time, Axe was popular with many guys my age, and my grandmother had no idea I was gay, so I can’t say I blame her for any of that. I ended up giving those gift boxes to one of my nephews who was all over it, so I guess some good came of it.

Yes, l remember it well. The year my brother got a skateboard and l got one. I was told l was given it because they didn't want me getting upset. Guess what, he never used his skateboard, l was on it almost everyday for a good year. We had a very wide sidewalk with a very slight incline, like it was made for tweens on skateboards.

I got a used dish towel for Christmas from my mother in law. That same Christmas, she also gave me an old felt broach that she’d previously asked me if I wanted, and to which I’d politely declined. The gifts, if you can even call them that, were items left behind after her sister died, and they still had this musty scent on them. Ugh. Just so much no.

Still, when Christmas comes around and coworkers or friends start talking about their worst gifts ever received, I’m usually close to the top of the pile for worst gifts ever, so I suppose I have her to thank for that. Ha!

Rollerskates and stilts. Both utterly hopeless from my point of view. Could not balance the skates without falling over and the stilts I could not get on with!

Someone gave me dish towels with words written on them:

They're funny but not really what I want hanging in my kitchen!

I don’t know about my “worst” gift, but my aunt and a uncle often gave me very useless or silly gifts growing up. One time they gave me a Reggae Passover CD. I like reggae music when it’s done tastefully, but this CD just sounded silly.

An expensive bottle of brandy. Appreciated the thought behind it, but I was three years sober in AA at the time. It was promptly re-gifted.

recieved 3 times a wristwatch (no rolex, but also no trash), which is definitely no worse gift, but I never weared any of them, because I don´t like the feeling of them on my arm and I don´t need them too. in the 3rd time I wanted to prevent it and said that I already have 2, which I not use, but I still recieved one lol.

I not recieved many gifts. I always wanted a laptop in my youth, but never recieved one. I had to buy one myself with 22 when I started to study, so very late. and my first smartphone I recieved around 16, don´t know if I bought it myself or not.

one gift, which I like and which was really practical was a good backpack. I use it all the time for many years now.

it´s not that important for me to recieve gifts and the relationship to the person and the intention behind it, is 100x times more important for me, but things that I have a practical use for are great. or something like a good wine, which I can drink with this person for example. or some activity together. or self-made food or cake. or something personal.

as a youth I always wanted to have things for the bureau like hole puncher, binder and so on. lol. or I wanted to have a suit lol.

A half-eaten box of chocolates for Valentines day. It was also hilarious so I was happy.

Honestly? any and all attempts at birthday parties or gifts for those.

I dislike attention, I dislike traditions, I see no point in celebrating the date I was born in. I had to fight for many years in my childhood so it could all just be ignored.

I feel the same, but I have had to relent on this one. Birthday celebrations are very important to my wife and daughter and I do need to consider their mental well-being in addition to mine. However... NO MORE SURPRISE PARTIES. My wife only tried it once. Didn't end well.

I don't remember most of the lame gifts, I just remember thinking on several occasions, "Oh... I wonder why you got me this." I remember being annoyed as a child when I received a dream catcher. It would actually be kind of cool now, but for some reason I thought it was the lamest thing ever.

I think the worst gift I’ve ever gotten was this handheld electronic game that broke within five minutes of me using it. The game itself wasn’t bad but the fact that it stopped working in the middle of my first time using it was pretty bad. I also got this really bad VHS tape rip off of Disney’s Mulan which I eventually taped over with episodes of South Park. I got into trouble for that but the knockoff was extremely bad that even YouTubers have talked about how stupid and awful the thing was. It also came with some CD with songs from other cheap knockoff movies the company had made and it had an “accident” with a metal nail file and a desk drawer. There was also that horrifying taxidermy decapitated head. I was so glad when someone else wanted it and took it home with them.
