Working on a song. Could use production help.

Tunes and Toons
So I'm learning the rope regarding recording with Linux. I've been trying to get the hang of using Ardour, and have finally eeked out enough experience to record something with it. Keep in mind that it's in a really rough state (I don't even have vocals recorded yet), but let me know how it sounds.

Odd Girl - Rough Mix

Honestly if you were going for a very retro / 80s vibe, I think you nailed it; everything from the snare reverb to the synths and the very drum-machine / static nature of the kit, it sounds straight out of the 80s home-recording fidelity which is pretty amazing. Most people fail really hard at this and I'm almost convinced that this song is super old.

You could always slap something like TB's Reelbus on top to give it some cassette warble, too. Most mysterious song on the internet part II, perhaps?

Yeah it does sound like it is retro, I think the mix is pretty good so far . I liked when it went to that heavy part at the end . That’s was unexpected. In terms of production what do you need help with ?

It sounds like something the B52's would write...a mish-mash of punk pop. If that's what you're going for, then I think you nailed it. Good job!

This is really good. I'd love to hear the final product. You've built a good foundation to work with. Cheers! :)

I recorded some vocals. I'll be adding some backing vocals later, but I figured someone should give a listen to how the main vocals sound now. There may be something needed with the production that I'm missing.

The vocals seem not to sit in mix in at ideal level, unless that is what you're going for. For a slightly more pro balance, perhaps a little more compression might be in order. Some professionals like to set the lead vocal compression as 4:1. A small tweak in the lead vocal volume might do the trick as well. There's no perfect setting, you'll need to go by ear.

With vocals now in the mix, the section from about 3:09 to 3:25 seems a bit stark. Perhaps a little bit of organ or echo effect might be helpful. Again, it all depends on what you're going for. The song has an indie feel, so I wouldn't recommend getting too slick with the mix. The song seems to want to be a bit raw in it's sound.

Overall, there is lots to like about this recording so far. I know it can seem like once you change one thing, then something else feels out of sorts. To my ear, you're getting close. Keep up the good work. I look forward to hearing the backing vocals in the mix.

You've really nailed Odd Girl, IMHO. I can't think of anything else it needs. Well done.

Binary Revelation is not the kind of thing I normally listen to. I'm more of a Classic Rock/Blues guy. With that being said, I liked it more than I would have thought.

Good luck with your continued musical projects.

I made a new song that could really use some production pointers. I'm trying to keep it as loud and chaotic as possible since it's in more of a hardcore punk/grindcore style, but I still want to maintain some vocal fidelity. By the way, it's a quick listen: it's only 7 seconds long.

It's interesting. I might prefer a bit more low-mids, as long as it doesn't interfere with the vocals. I wholeheartedly agree with your desire to keep the vocals intelligible. Other than that, what you've sounds fine.

To my ear, it sounds better. Since this is not the kind of thing I listen to, I'm not sure if I can add more than that.
