Instead of obsessing over interpretations of archaic texts that are meant to create conformists, he really should look into logic and reason.
Now, you are getting to the core of a person here. What makes a person gravitate towards any religion? Why are some people more likely to be intellectually engaged in their belief systems and cognitive biases? To them...the teachings within the religion ARE logical and wise. The world is full of people...what type of psychological, anatomical, physiological, genetic/epigenetic makeup creates a person who finds belonging, safety, security...home...within a religion?
The world might (or not) be a better place if everyone did a lot more of that...it would all but eliminate "belief" and "cognitive bias" and "emotion"...it would allow people to properly engage in critical thinking...assessing both sides of an argument, etc. However, it has become apparent that humans are also flawed, emotional and social creatures...and that emotional component will consistently override the logic centers and the social component creates a sense of belonging, safety, and security. For some...religion might be the only thing grounding their existence, such as it is...for their life has been filled with pain (physical and/or psychological).
Working with the public...in healthcare...witnessing new life being brought into this world, as well as, death in all manner of ways, I operate both within a world of science and the metaphysical. I must have some respect and understanding of both.
Again...not for us, as ASD forum members, sitting behind computer screens, to judge...for we are not blessed/cursed with the clairvoyance to understand all the inputs/influences that make another human being behave the way they do.
