Yes, there are multiple systems throughout the world. Many of them are similar, but I'll avoid confusion for now by referring only to the Western and Chinese ones. Under the Western system you'd be a Virgo. For the Chinese system, your year of birth determines your sign.

Are they linked to animals in the western system?
 
I don't understand astrology. How do you go from stars to people? In fact how do you go from anything to people?

Im a Libra, 27th Sept 1985, born at 5:20am. I think it was a Friday.
 
Well, before there were any scientific, logical tests by which to prove a hypothesis, people turned to much simpler means of explanation. We used to believe that maggots would spawn from rotting food (because we couldn't see the eggs). As I understand it, astrology originated as a means to understand ourselves through the lens of deities and the then-unknown universe.
 
I dont believe in astrology but my star sign is leo and my chinese sign is the rooster. It would be interesting to see if any one can say the year and month I was born or narrow it down anyway lol.
 
Ravkrat, thanks for that link! That was a very informative read, glad to finally have an understanding about that finally, I could never figure out what they meant about the Sun, moon, etc stuff.
