If you are going for comic satire or parody, you will have to stick with character archetypes (smart one, crazy one, dumb one, sane one, etc) and the standard variants (vampire, human, robot, werewolf, fairy, princess, etc.)

If you are going for something more original, you have an entire slew of mythology to pick from. It might be fun to mix mythologies together instead of sticking with just greek/german/european. What happens when Shiiva, Loki, and Ra are roommates?
