TV background sound.

I am terribly distracted by the noise behind the dialog of many TV programs. I don't mean pleasant background music. I mean frenetic noise, sometimes produced by musical instruments, but often, just the everyday sounds that are supposed to create reality. Or "music" that is far from melodic but is expected to create tension. I absolutely hate it and I can't ignore it very well. I am slightly hard of hearing, mostly the high frequencies, and the background often makes it difficult to follow the dialog. Icreasing the volume simply makes the problem worse. I do have hearing aids but they make very little difference in the amount of irritation I experience. Is this maybe a part of my Aspieness? Most recently, I watched a new episode of NCIS and the garbage noise was extremely noticeable and quite a distraction.

I don't hear all that because I am hard of hearing. I have to watch with captioning in order to actually understand what is going on. Sometimes if it is loud enough, though, I get a little upset and distracted by it. I get that part.

My hearing is very good. So TV drives me nuts. I like cartoons. Everything is usually simpler in cartoons. Especially those old ones from the Golden Age of animation that my kid has taken a liking to.

Yes, I have the same issues with my TV to and that is why I keep it really low. But, every once in a while there is a frequency on TV that actually hurts my ears. Even some voices cause problems for me. Some times I have to turn it down enough where it is barely audible, especially when I'm at the computer. Unfortunately I don't have "Closed Captioning" on this cheap TV.

Yes, I find it just about impossible to understand what people are saying when more than one person is speaking at once, and background music can be distracting or stop my from hearing. These days I rarely watch TV, I prefer to watch videos on YouTube where I can replay when I didn't understand something. I also find it hard to stay focused, my mind wanders and I miss bits all the time. For me the worse thing is background studio laughter in comedy shows, grrr!

I refuse to watch any show with a laugh track! If I find something funny I will decide if a laugh is warranted. I hate being manipulated.

I don't have that issue as much, but I do prefer to use closed captions because I tend to miss a lot. Especially if they have different accents. (I'm American and if something has a British cast, I need to put the captions on) Also I find the tv very distracting. Meaning if anyone is trying to talk to me, or I need to read something, then I have to put it on mute. Splitting my attention is nigh on impossible.

You may want to look into a noise canceling hearing device, one that helps reduce background noise while amplifying voices.
