Today I learned...

Came across this in the last couple of days. Not sure how to take. I know isotopic analysis, When I was in college not a thing now it is.

One-time president of the National Rifle Association, Charlton Heston was a self-declared liberal Democrat. He refused to work with John Wayne due to his conservative views.

Heston's political stance seems contradictory to his famous quote,
"I'll give you my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands."

Just watched a video on Canadians fighting in Afghanistan, basically repeat of how the fought in first and second world wars. Our soldiers are like honey badgers, do not screw with them. Better example is wolverine. saw a video of a dead bear killed by a mating pair of wolverines. Yes we like cold, dark. Incidentally my son ang his buddies go winter camping, every year, slept in pickup truck last year did not use cabin and wood stove too much work SIster did this when working as geologist. told me how to do it no sleeping bag blankets better, as over time sleeping bags tend to stink. Boy is she tough, all male crew only, woman, she was the boss. No her name is not Olga. Long blonde hair.

I never understood his changes. He seemed so liberal, fighting for race causes, then became something I did not understand.

That whole situation seems very strange to Aussies, we don't worship celebrities the way you do and we don't know what any of their political stances are. None of them would dare to declare what their stance is as doing so would spell instant death for that party. But in Australia we don't even discuss that with family members, it's considered to be a very personal and private affair which is why celebrities keep their mouths shut. For a celebrity to throw support behind a political party would be very offensive to us no matter who we support in private.

I like that approach better lol. Celebrities would be better off keeping their mouths shut about a number of topics...

People on the left think I'm on the right, and vise-versa. What I believe is both a synthesis and revelation of commonalities, but all they see is a straw man who disagrees.

Good question. Not all that common, but it can happen in Hollywood.

19 Celebrities Who Shocked Fans By Publicly Changing Their Political Affiliations

I will not read the link because I have too much to read. If I read everything I am interested in my brain gets overstimulated and it kind of goes crazy and numb until it rests. But thank you for offering it.

I have looked up to actors too much. I believed they were the roles they played and thought they were terrific people but they are just people and some not very nice at all. Some are. But I have changed my opinions in my life, they can change too. I have not changed how I feel about treating people fairly and well though. A person changing how they feel about that is not understandable to me. I wonder about that.

That sounds wonderful. I wish it were that way here. Personal and private. That would keep people from hating each other online.

Years ago there was a company I bought wheelchair parts from. They made great casters and from suspensions. I really liked them. I met the owner at an Abilities Expo, a show for disability organizations and equipment. He was a politician and started talking to me about his views. I kept trying to stop him. I liked him, I liked his company, I did not want to talk politics. His views were abhorrent to me and once he talked to me about them I could not go back. We were fine until he made me listen to him. I wish he kept his beliefs private. I could have mine and he had his and we would still be able to talk to each other nicely and do business.

Exactly. I feel like if I do not agree totally with some one's political view they look for a way to hate me instead of just disagree or wait for me to learn more and change my mind, or not chang my mind but still be a good person.

It is curious that so many people value the opinions of actors when, by definition, an actor is good at fooling us into thinking they are whatever the director planned. Also, experts of all stripes regularly make fools of themselves when out of their field. The opinions of certain astrophysicists on food seem extremely naive.

Yes. My I asked my urologist a question because of what other doctors had told me but they were not urologists. He rolled his eyes, he was frustrated. He said he hears that a lot and it is not true. He was an expert in this area. They were different kinds of experts. It is okay not to know things. Sorry if the wording is confusing but I think knowing you do not know things is very good, it helps everybody.

I am still confused about actors though. They convince me so well they are their characters.

It is an ancient method of storytelling (whether the story is true or not).

I did not think of it that way. I am amazed at how they convince me. One actor played an awkward naive overconfident new actor in Hollywood. His character was annoying to me. He was desperate for a role and would take anything, kind of begging people all the time. I did not like him.

Then he got a chance because he was already in a studio office to do a character in a table read. He was amazing. That he could convince me of both things astonished me.

A favorite actor of mine all my life since childhood once played a man so evil I cannot watch him any more. I do not know how they do it.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who can be convincing actors for short events, like product returns, job interviews or Police reports.
When I first heard of the sages describing our existence as a vast illusion, I though they were talking about the amount of empty space within atoms, etc. Now, I also see everyone going around navigating by different inaccurate and incomplete mental models of everything else. People believe their illusions so strongly that they can be killed simply by the power of suggestion, if all the acting is adequate. And, many false actors may be convinced themselves, which makes it much easier. Illusions piled on illusions based on assumptions. Additionally, every time we play a memory in our minds, it gets overwritten, and can change radically. This mess is how we all muddle through.
