I have been wondering something. I am not starting a discussion or sharing my opinion at all. So i hope i am allowed to ask this. I just wanted to know .... What is the reason why any mention of the idea of a link between vaccines and autism is banned? If asking this question is also not allowed, let me know. I'm hoping there's no harm in asking. Hopefully my curiosity hasn't got the better of me.

Speaking only for myself, I believe that topics that tend to inflame passions are strongly discouraged because AC is a positive, supportive refuge. There are places on the web for polarizing topics. This place is a refuge from the impassioned negativity of such. Once you've made up your mind, you don't need to look for converts to whatever point of view has been adopted.

I believe it's the same reason AC does not host a politics, philosophy, or religion forum, also. A search of all threads will reveal prior discussions by admins and mods on the topic. And also, some samples of the very behaviors that aren't welcome here (generally, a combative or crusading stance, that divides the world into war camps).

Ah yes that makes sense. I agree that it's not just nice to have a place free of nastiness, but much needed for many people, myself included. Because i haven't seen it discussed here i wasn't aware that it would cause friction, but now you've written what you wrote i can understand that now. (Sometimes things have to be explained or i wouldnt ever understand. Thank you)

My understanding is that the supposed link was bad science and has been well and truely debunked since, but the impact lingers on, meaning some kids don't get vacinated for serious diseases because their parents are needlessly worried. Discussing it helps it linger longer. A TED talk someone recently posted here on the history of autism mentions this. Watch this:

Really a moderator should answer this question, but they are very sensitive about controversial issues on this forum. They don't encourage the discussion of topics which will potentially lead to conflict between members, or may upset people. If a moderator senses that a discussion is turning into a conflict, or is going into a controversial area, they step in. Another forum I'm a member of has a debate section for such discussions, but not this one. They want to keep things calm, friendly and safe.

Hi,

This subject was already 'banned for discussion' before I came here. As far as I know it is because it has been proven to be dodgy science, and, I guess, AC doesn't want to be associated with it. This may need admin to explain rather than a noob like me ;)

However, concerning hyper sensitive subjects, if you feel you'd like to debate it you can always start a 'conversation' (PM) and invite those people who are interested. This means it can be discussed amongst yourselves and is kept off the main threads.

Yeah, ideally we could discuss anything, but some contentious subjects tend to attract partisans and the pre-exsisting conflict just breaks out whenever it appears.

Kind of like it must have been for the neighbors of the Hatfields and McCoys. ;)
