I refer to the report ?PM: Getting politics right critical for S?pore? (July 6).

I agree with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong?s view that by raising the education and skills of Singaporeans, ?everybody can earn a good living for himself?, that foreign investors may create a larger multiplier effect on Singapore?s economy and that people should work together productively rather than fight over some ?unbridgeable divide within the society?.

Inevitably, some Singaporeans will not be able to rise though the education system, whether due to personal ability or a lack of resources to develop their areas of core competence.

Others may have skills that do not immediately translate into tangible gains for the economy. And while specialised schools may help tap their potential, this path might not suit everybody.

There should be support for Singaporeans who choose unconventional careers and we should look at how they can also contribute to our economy in their own way.

At the same time, we should continue to help those who fall through the cracks and lack the finances to further their education and acquire the skills needed for better-paying jobs.

I believe this applies to people worldwide.

As socialist as it may sound, I always thought that there should be more involvement and support from governments for people to actually get somewhere, especially those few that struggle to get somewhere. Nowadays, and maybe that's just a "western world" thing, there is support to survive (through welfare) but it doesn't help anyone any further. Employment and education still stagnates because of this.
