A book I enjoyed was Grasshopper Jungle, by Andrew Smith.
Stylistically it resembled the writing of Kurt Vonnegut.

After reading Grasshopper Jungle I read another by the same
author. 100 Sideways Miles.

Both books have main characters that are high school age boys.
