I use subtitles in my own language because I usually can't understand everything someone is saying, especially when it's scripted or jump-cut a million times over.

I will say that having to read subtitles otherwise (versus dubbed movies) really makes my brain hurt and I'm not sure why
 
Sometimes I like using subtitles for a language that I am studying as a means of learning. Other times I will test different languages subtitles just to see what they are like. I also usually use subtitles in my own language to watch movies on my phone so I can leave the sound off since no one is watching the movie with me.
 
I use subtitles for a lot of different television material as I seem to have an issue with audio processing at times and it can be hit and miss whether I hear exactly what is said (I normally get most of what is said, but I want to get ALL of what is said) and it can be frustrating without subtitles.

If only real life had the option of subtitles? 😂

Real life subtitles, I would love that!
I use subtitles for almost everything I watch, it saves on the limited lip reading approach.
After I recognised my Auditory processing issues as diffferent to how many other people experience the world I started using subtitles especially with music videos, then tv with strong accents and now its with almost everything. For shared tv I've had to pull back on my use of them because my Autistic husband has visual processing difficulties and struggles with the distraction of the subtitles!
