Staying energized as we age: what really works?

Lately I’ve been reading a lot about how people try different approaches to keep their energy up and recover faster as they get older. Some swear by changes in diet, others rely on exercise routines, and then there are all kinds of supplements or treatments people talk about.


I’m curious — what’s worked best for you personally when it comes to maintaining energy and feeling good day to day?
 
Enthusiasm.

As long as I'm happy and enthusiastic about what I'm doing I seem to have plenty of energy. I don't seem to get as excited about things as I used to when I was younger though and that enthusiasm doesn't happen as often. I definitely started slowing down once I got over 45. Now I'm 60 I can spend weeks at a time doing nothing.
 
Eating a good diet, staying hydrated with plain water, moderately exercising, having close, loving bonds with my family and assorted friends, and getting good medical advice and care. It helps we are financially comfortable and that I am not (yet) stressed out about money. Worrying about money can take years off your life.
 
It is a combination of consciously maintaining your good health (sleep, diet, supplements, activity, etc.) ...so that your body is able...and your state of mind in terms of being able to wake up in the morning with something to do. For myself, I get all my things done in the morning when I am fresh...then later, time permitting, I can relax and take a nap in the afternoon.

I am actually looking forward towards retirement so I can do all the things I never could because of work. At this point in my life work is an interruption and "necessary evil".

I have heard it said a number of times "I'm so busy now that I'm retired, I don't know how I ever had time to go to work." With myself, this is entirely true.

Now I'm 60 I can spend weeks at a time doing nothing.
I have not learned this skill. If I am conscious, I am working on some project or other, even if it's only in my head.
 
Staying active physically as I pursue my interests. For the past couple of days a friend and I have been out fossil and mineral collecting. We have gone after trilobites and obsidian yesterday cracking rock and splitting shale with a 3 lb hammer at the trilobite quarry. Then today spent three hours with a heavy pick digging dugway geodes out of the geode beds. Hard work, but I find it rewarding.

When we get back home my friend will teach me how to slab the obsidian, cutting and polishing it to replace the facing on a knife frame that he has given me. I will be using snowflake obsidian I found. The white crystals of cristobalite in the jet black obsidian looks like snow falling in the dark of winter.
 
Something like Outdated said, if you have hopes, and motivation or passion with something, the physical health, i believe depends a lot in the 'spiritual' side.
