" Retail Apocalypse ", Sears, and malls.

...I remember Fitzgerald's, I had a card/account there. Awwwwwww. I guess the downtown places have a cheapskate/rube/old guy/if somebody with no money comes into a teeny touch and decides to live it up at a casino this is the place they'll go to rep?:D Even a famous name like the Sands? Ah well.
I remember noting, in my GS days, billboard/s for Wayne Newton and Sigfred and Roy (pre-tiger) Reno engagements somewhere. Presumably taking a week off from Vegas a couple times a year. I remember, I think, once trying to go to the public library on a Saturday or Sunday and finding it either shut or closing real early - Presumably, they didn't want people to be too distracted from the casinos:cool:! I recall, too, then being attracted by a more " big " casino downtown, possibly that " other " Nugget - I was attracted by a casino revue titled " Larger Than Life ", IIRC, presumably a cover of the Backstreet Boys song (which I liked then). While I'm digging thru mah haid:smiley: for nearly every Reno reference I can think of, I'll mention Richard Farina's 1960s novel, BEEN DOWN SO LONG LOOKS LIKE UP TO ME and his song titled " Reno Nevada ". And is there still a casino in Reno called the Silver Dollar? Jim Reeves name-dropped it! ( " A Railroad Bum "):hearteyecat:

The Silver Dollar closed back in 2009. Fitzgerald's was completely rebuilt as a non-gaming hotel now known as the Whitney Peak Hotel. A tribute or memorial depending on how you look at how even downtown Reno has evolved away from gaming. But you can do some amateur artificial climbing there.

At least the Reno Arch is still here, updated but with no plans to remove it.

The casino I loved for so long was already gone when I moved to Nevada in 2008. -Harold's Club. RIP :(

The Great Recession took its toll on gaming as much as it and Internet sales did on retail.

Still, seeing an empty Sears here seems a grim sight indeed. Just something very unnatural about it.

It's interesting and it's sad too at the same time. People don't want to walk around in malls very much these days and you don't see many people doing that. Yet where I live the larger malls do well. Especially as a result of the climate, it's so cold in the winter that people go to malls to get exercise in a warm environment and simply to get out and do something in the winter. So stores stay open and relevant. There's a skating rink in one, where you can skate around and stop at a few concession booths. There's also inside rides like roller coasters, ferris wheels and merry go rounds. Which are occupied a good part of the weekends and on holidays. All the stores have outside access, so you can park and go in and out quickly.

...I may be giving an impression of myself as FAR, FAR, more a gambler than I am!!!!!!!!!!!:p (I am thinking of Frankie Laine, " They ca-all me the moo-onlight gambler "!;Wouldja believe Madonna:D? Bob Segero_O?) Really, these Reno trips I've mentioned have been a very large percentage of all the gambling I've done in my life!!!!!!!!!!!:dizzy:
I never learned to play cards - I cannot play poker, or even bridge - so I can only play slots when I have gambled, and not even " video pokies " (Any OZ-ites here?:D) or anything that depends on knowing cards' rules, just total games of chance! Which I will mention a bit, below:smile:.........

A perfectly honorable pastime.

Paying state taxes for the citizens of Nevada. We thank you.

It's the same here where I live, you have a few stores doing well but the smaller stores aren't doing as well. For the most part the dollar store around here is doing the best of any store.

Yep. Going into either one of our "Dollar Tree" stores and it seems very seldom that sales are slow. With many patrons using shopping carts filled with merchandise.
