You remember the movie "Rainman"? He supposedly is severe autistic, right? Well, they depict the character as they see him, but what is going on inside Rainman's head and what's happening from his point of view?
 
Did you ever see the film 'Being there' with Peter Sellers?

It's about assumptions made by those outside on what's going on inside someone and seeing their innocent simplicity as political intelligence. I know it's not about RainMan but it seemed relevant. We get a wonderful insight into this process.
 
All one needs to do is to google the name "Kim Peek". The real life person who served as the model for "Rainman", as a mega-savant.

Trouble was, Kim Peek was mistakenly diagnosed as autistic when he was later diagnosed as having a rare case of FG Syndrome. A condition related to congenital brain abnormalities.

One of those "minor details" Hollywood tends to habitually leave out. :rolleyes:

While his story is a very real one, IMO it does not serve the autistic community particularly well.

Dustin Hoffman said he never completely copied Kim Peek it was actually an amalgamation of other people with autistic neurology which I agree with

Thank you for posting this. Fascinating and a eye opener. This really happens that people are declared retarded and it's shocking. Yet, they can be extremely intelligent human beings.
 
My dream in first grade was to read all the books in our children's library. I was so lucky that this existed in this tiny town l lived in. But his ability to read with his left eye on one page and his right eye on a different page, unheard off.
 
I enjoyed Rainman very much. Some of it I related to.
Mainly the not wanting the change. Even if it were to what most would deem a better invironment.
When I find a place I am comfortable with I do not want it to change.
The main reason I have led a very cloistered life.
