What is the difference between Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) and Asperger? I heard they are quite similar, but PDD has different characteristics. Can someone explain the difference between them, because I'm a little confused.

It is my understanding that with PPD there can be certain amount cognitive and linguistic impairment and with AS there is not. I'm sure it's not that simple and may be very different in the new DSM. I am looking forward to anymore information on this, as I would like to know too.
 
PDD-NOS is a diagnosis that is given when someone has symptoms of autism, but not quite enough to qualify for a diagnosis of autism. I don't see how it would be similar to Asperger's except for the perception that both are milder than autism proper.

What do you mean by cognitive and linguistic impairment? Don't know what that means. Also what is DSM?

cognitive and linguistic: aspies are known generally for being smart and using big words. As children, there is generally no delay in their ability to speak. However, there may be other reasons why they don't.

DSM is the American medical publication outing diagnosis requirements for many different things. I think some (most?) people regard its description of Aspergers as rather limited and incomplete. But the focus is differentiating between options.

My cynical interpretation of PDD-NOS: the NOS means 'we don't know'. It's a miscellaneous category for related issues.

Hey, I know that NOS. I memorized that word! when I was like, a teenager or something! I am not sure, but I think If I recall correctly????????????? (not sure????) PDD-NOS was my very FIRST diagnosis...... (there were more).......

THAT is pretty much what the Doctor said to me

It was PDD-NOS , ONLY , because they had no other words , no other box, no other diagnosis to put me in a category, and the Doctors, they do like the categories. I guess. sighs. Now, I must search through all my old paper files! Yikes! In the days before computers...........
