Thomas Nobrega from Sunderland, who has been nominated for a Prince's Trust award
A pair of inspiring young people from Sunderland are in the running for awards after successfully turning their lives around.
Thomas Nobrega and Kimberley Stewart are both in line to scoop honours at The Prince’s Trust and Samsung Celebrate Success Awards on November 26 in Gateshead.
Youth charity The Prince’s Trust gives disadvantaged young people the skills and confidence to find a job.
Three in four young people helped by The Prince’s Trust move into work, training or education.
The awards recognise the achievements of disadvantaged young people across the North East who have succeeded against the odds, improved their chances in life and had a positive impact on their community.
Thomas, 20, is an aviation fan with Asperger Syndrome who experienced a difficult start to life.
He has a number of disabilities including hearing loss and curvature of the spine.
He was sent to a school for the deaf, where he was severely bullied.
Following help from The Trust, Thomas is now working at Newcastle Airport and is one step closer to his dream of working as cabin crew.
Kimberley, 24, made some bad lifestyle choices. She conceived a child but the relationship broke down.
Kim felt judged and found herself alone with no social life or career.
With help from the trust, she got back on her feet, improved her confidence and now has a successful career in retail.
The ceremony will honour young people who have overcome issues such as abuse, drug addiction, homelessness and depression and will be held at the Sage concert venue.
