Newly diagnosed

Hi All,

Just joined up. I'm 26 and have just received a preliminary diagnosis of autism. While I have many family members with autism, including my father, I never really considered it as applicable to me. I'm not handling it overly well. I'm a solicitor and have four degrees, but I practise in a particularly niche field that allows plenty of leeway for "eccentric types".

Up until this year I dealt with being different by pretending I wasn't and stubbornly forcing my way through and working on creating the perfect facade of normality. The facade started crumbling when I moved from junior roles into a full solicitor role and began needing to spend a lot more face time in meetings etc. I've been told frequently, especially as a child, that I probably had both ADHD and autism. I went to a psychiatrist to be assessed for ADHD only and walked out with a preliminary diagnosis for both.

Receiving this diagnosis wasn't exactly a relief, more deep horror after spending so much time trying to not be my father's daughter here I am in the exact same position as him. I thought a good first step was spending some time among others experiencing this and we'll see how we go.

So, hi everyone, *waves and runs away rapidly*

Hi RainbowLady

welcome to af.webp

Getting autism from your father is exactly the same as getting it from the Easter Bunny. You both have the same medical condition and you are not your father. Whats a solicitor?
