Hi,

I'd like to introduce myself. Amongst other things, I'm a 40 something mother of 2 boys and have recently had aspergers brought to my attention. Reading the symptoms was like reading my own biography.

I've always felt a bit like a hedgehog in a hamster cage.

I've never really had a close friendship, every time I think I'm making friends it all just seems to evaporate into nothing. I go to great lengths to avoid social situations and am far more comfortable on my own or behind a camera.

I have always been clumsy and often find that I've put my clothes on backwards. I do like to wear the same thing every day, but for the sake of social convention I have a dozen near identical dresses in different colours that I rotate. Still the same basic structure. I have aspects of my daily routine that are immovable and I get very stressed with any interruption.

I do monologue, a lot, largely because almost everyone I know seems to be pathologically uninteresting. My family have all accused me of lack of empathy, to the point where I have to fake it. When I develop an interest in something, like astronomy, cellular biology or neuroscience, I get incredibly focused to the exclusion of all else and would love to turn one of my interests into a PhD.

I can now pick up on social cues but in a very logical, almost digital fashion, however I would much rather not have to.

So I guess I was just wondering if there are any other hedgehogs out there before I hop back on the hamster wheel and fake enjoyment.

welcome.webp

You are definitely not alone. It is great to have a place we can talk with others who understand and who can relate.

Yup, yup... *nods head* I'm in my 40's in a similar position, although I've never been married or had children... I can relate...
