Need a Job where I don't meet people

Hi people. Im looking for advice for a work place. This is about me trying to find an independent job.

***Side story(Just ignore it)***

I pretty recently have come to the realization that I'm not compatible with people, I mean at all. I'm 37 and I work as a forklift driver at a place where I have to interact with people and it's the same old story where I don't know what to say and people find me very weird. I tried over the decades, to appear normal, but it doesn't work. And I now know that it will never get any better. Even women who are interested in me, just find me awkward and strange. And I never know what to do or how to act. And I tried, over and over. It's the same old story. None of my social skills have improved much at all since I became an adult. I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm looking for a way out of this environment, while having a steady income so I can pay my rent. I'm well aware that most workplaces are social(like 95%), filled with people who have social needs, but I'm not that type of person.

***Side story(Just ignore it)***

What I want to do now is to find work where I avoid meeting people or where people just don't know who I am and I have to speak with them on a very minimal level. I have been thinking about maybe some sort of self employment where I can make my own products and sell it online type of stuff. Maybe even transport of goods or services(as long it's not people). Maybe similar to like Uber eats, but i've heard they don't get payed much. I live in Europe, so we have other regional online food ordering companies.

A few years back I was working as a local newspaper deliverer where I go to the delivery wagon that was packed with the magazines and I distributed them to the post boxes in a region. Never met any work colleague, almost no interactions with anyone. The pay was absolute garbage, and no way to pay rent with it. But I was pretty much the happiest at this work place(from a social point of view), with the exception that it was outside work with crappy weather half the time.

You can give any suggestions except Software Development(or IT). That whole industry is just a scam. A dirty job like cleaning toilets is also something I refuse.

I won’t get into the emotions and sympathy as you requested, and get straight to the point…

I support your delivery idea. I’ve had a lot of relief from what you described in being a delivery driver. There is definitely some social contact, but it is minimal and very structured. I report to a warehouse in the morning for a short period of time and then spend the day in my car. The deliveries do require a short interaction, but this is structured and sometimes less than 1 minute.

As you mentioned, sometimes the pay, the hours, or the availability isn’t great, but it can be a job that gets some steady income and then can be paired with what you describe as self employment. Who knows if that would work for you or not, but I totally understand how being in a workplace that drains you so completely does not feel like a sustainable.

Delivery driving was a huge change for me, and I am very happy that I found it.

What about trucking? I've heard that it's pretty bad for your health, but if you do cross-continental trucking you should be able to travel for long periods without interacting with anyone (except at bars and truck stops).

Well, it seems like @Rodafina said it just before me, so yeah, what she said.

Yeah, I'll second this, might be worth looking into.

Somewhat recently I actually sat down and watched some Youtube stuff on this subject... some channels run by people who do long haul semi stuff for a living, like this one lady who was showing her truck, talking about how it worked, showing her little room area behind the cab, talking about her favorite truck stops, and so on... there was a lot to learn there and it was very well presented.

Might be worth researching a bit, maybe? Ya certainly dont have to make direct contact with people nearly as much and you'll get to see some cool places too.

I worked on poil coating lines for years, a lot of their hourly positions are well suited for loaners various stations on the line such as coater operators. entry and console operators work alone,

Remote jobs. Then you don't leave your house.
That's what I want to do as well! I worked 16 years with people and tried to mask and hide my Autism and be like everyone else. Instead of fulfilment and sense of accomplishment etc my mental health worsen to the point I don't leave house anymore. And just realized that this is what I needed. Stay at home alone. Instead I'm in the state of mind that I can't even start working from home now. But... Remote working is on the agenda...

I recommend trucking - you also don’t have to do long haul if you don’t want to . you can do local if needed . Even better is driving at night .

An experienced forklift driver is a valuable asset. It's something many people aren't capable of without being a danger to those around them. I'd look for other forklift jobs but in a more industrial or factory environment.

I'm actually qualified forklift instructor with years of experience driving variety of kits... Anxiety put everything to scrutiny though...
I have to admit that it's one of the most underpaid jobs out there...

Working on a forklift in factory environment makes You to deal with people on daily basis even more. I would suggest using those skills in small warehousing company where You deal with one driver at the time and load picked with the forklift by Yourself. Mostly it's dealing with going to an office to pass paperwork back and forth and chatting to a driver if You willing to. Factories are mostly fast paced and communication based roles. Knowledge from experience...

Forklift job in Amazon warehouse?
Very fast paced, some long hours but decent pay.

Postal sorter at main Sorting office/distribution hub.
repetitive (almost soothing) work. Huge warehouses, easy enough to blend into background.

Some kind of delivery driver:

Blood bank donations.
Organ/transplant courier.
Morgue - transporting people but non will want a conversation with you.

Pharmacy delivery driver. - transporting meds to customers, hospitals, pharmacies.

Washroom service attendant -Collection and changing of sanitary bins from various businesses. Restock paper goods and handsoaps etc.

Courier work -delivering parcels and packets.

Home shopping delivery driver.
Customer orders shopping and pays for goods online. You work for supermarket that delivers their shopping to their doorstep.

plate driver. - I only know this job as a "plate driver"
collect newly imported car and drive to showroom to deliver. (get paid)
collect a different vehicle from showroom and drive to another car dealers across country (get paid) and so on. Spending much time on highways and byways by yourself collecting and delivering cars.

My current job does involve people.
Some of the groups I transport to school/college are mostly on the spectrum.
Our borough council and local education authority provide the funding to transport these kids to specialist schools and colleges or respite centres from their doorstep and back again afterwards.
Sometimes we chat amongst ourselves, sometimes everyone is quiet or just stimming after a busy day.
They're in safe, non judgmental hands with me as their driver :)

Consider getting on an exploration geology or geophysics crew. You can find yourself in places where the nearest population is over 100 miles away. Encounter wild predators up close and personal. Experience environments from -40 to 120 degrees. Collect rare tropical diseases. Learn what living on a live volcano is like. The lifestyle is probably not for everybody.

Doesn't fork lift operator sound a little more appealing now?

I had such thoughts my entire working life.

Never had one job that was distanced from customers or coworkers until I became self-employed.

Audible I think you can make a living off of. Side gig jobs of delivering packages has minimal social contact, a bit, but very minimal and you can make a living off of this too.

Bump bump.

If anyone still has more suggestions, keep them coming. Tbh, I am trying to avoid transport stuff if I can. More like I come to a place, do my work, clock in, clock out, go home.

Do you have any real resources or assets? Capitalized sufficiently to risk being self-employed?

That's ultimately the only way I was able to distance myself from co-workers. Where I had a job that had only one employee- myself. Using money to make money. But for me the risk was worth it.

Ironic to recall that I enjoyed work in a warehouse using a forklift. But the person that supervised me...OMG. I couldn't stand her. Made the job hell at times, more than all the manual labor I had to do outside the use of that forklift.
