My grandmother met an autistic boy at the supermarket

While waiting in line at the market, an autistic boy started talking to my grandmother. He was excited because the next day was his first day of school. My grandmother felt bad because a boy his age would have normally been going to school for a few years already. She was overcome with emotion and started crying. The boy's mother told her (in a comforting way) she shouldn't feel bad.

I don't think my grandmother did anything wrong. Her emotions were involuntary and that's just what she felt. I don't know how I would feel if I were the boy's parent though.

That's pretty much a reflection on the parent, but I bet she watched your grandmother connect with her son and be very moved by the experience, if her response was to comfort your grandmother. As you've presented it, that's a lovely story, and says so much about your grandmother's compassion.
