Mum praises Clarks sales assistant who went out of his way to make son with autism feel comfortable

A mum has written an open letter to Clarks praising one of their employees for going out of his way to help her young son with autism feel calm in a busy store.

Mum-of-two Gem Salter, 29, from Bridgwater, Somerset, needed to get six-year-old son River some new shoes for school. So, last week, she and husband Tim took him to the Clarks outlet store in Street.

However, River, who was diagnosed with autism at 23-months-old, has heightened senses so he struggles with noisy, busy, brightly lit, public spaces.

And when they got to Clarks, the store was ‘heaving’. Worried about how River would cope, mum asked for help.

In a Facebook message to the retailer earlier this week, where she praised shop assistant Aaran Daniells’ response, Gem explained: ‘I knew there was no way he would cope with that environment so I explained the situation to a member of staff. Without hesitation, Aaran led us away from the noise and crowds to a staff room and placed a Do Not Disturb sign on the door.’

She added: ‘He was very patient with River, who was anxious, and went and got lots of different shoes for him to try on.’

Not only did they get new shoes, but Aaran also gave Gem the store’s number and told her they’d happy book an appointment for River to come in before the shop opens, when it’s quiet, in future.

‘Autism acceptance at its best!’ wrote Gem. ‘Thank you Clarks in Street, and a massive thanks to the shop assistant Aaran Daniels.’

Her post has been liked an incredible 270,000 times and shared over 24,000 times.

Another mum also posted her own thanks to Aaran, writing: ‘Aaran is also the guy who helped get the right pair of school shoes for my daughter last week. She has Down Syndrome and will say yes to any question so asking if a shoe is comfy or fits well just doesn’t work.

‘It was really hard getting a good fit and Aaron was really patient and just kept trying pair after pair! Eventually we got some! A lovely guy & a credit to the store.’

Meanwhile, Clarks have responded to thank Gem for her feedback, thanking her for sharing the amazing feedback at a time when their teams are working really hard.

And Aaran himself replied with a simple: ‘Thank you for your kind words. Was a pleasure to serve you all.’

Anyone else think Aaran deserves a raise?
