Looking for coping strategies

I associate my name with my mother's discontent and trying to get me to respond to her silly unimportant questions or statements that she could figure out herself if she gave it a little thought.
I associate it with school whichb equals hell.
I associate it with breakups when your beloved starts calling you by your name and no longer 'hun' and I actually asked my boyfriend to not use it.

The cashiers at Walmart and other places tend to perk up, even smile, when I say, "Have a nice day, [whatever the name is on their employee ID tag]." Though some are curious how I knew their name.
