Learning How to Drive

I'm learning to drive this year, even though I'm 21 already! It's been rather complicated, personally. Has anyone else had this problem?

I didn't learn until I was 29. It took me a while to learn since I have no one to teach me except driving training. I was stuck in the parking lot for two lessons. Other people in the course that had someone to practice outside of school was able to drive outside the parking lot on the first lesson. For having a learning disability, it took me longer to learn. But at the end, I end up being a better driver than most of the students they had. Even the DMV was impressed with me during my road test. Just don't get any speeding tickets when your newly licences. It will really mess things up for you. I lucky I had a lawyer to help me out but note they are not cheap.

I started lessons when I was 20, and felt incompetent for the first months in. I felt scared and stressed, but I had an instructor who was patient, and whenever I made a mistake, always corrected me with positive feedback. With time and practice, I got some faith in my abilities and passed my exam on the second try.
Driving will take getting used to, but eventually it will grow familiar, and it's all about practicing. More so for some. It will also be easier to pay attention to the things around you once you get the motions of driving down, some actions will hardly require a thought after a while. You can also choose an autmatic over a manual car if it helps you.

OH MY GOD YES. And i live in a small town! Even in a small town driving on the back roads out by warehouses, roads nobody ever uses at the time my dad would take me, i would get so overwhelmed. My mind would blank and suddenly i couldn't even read the roads right and figure out which way was which. Without my dad i wouldn't have known whether a road was one way or not it was that bad.

I think if my parents had been aware that i probably have autism and have sensory issues, then it would have been easier. But they weren't. If your parents are aware and are okay with working with you on it, i'd mention anything that comes up to them. Or whoever is teaching you, for that matter. For me, my issues were a lack of routine, getting overloaded easily, and not being able to judge distances between me and, say, a parked car in my own neighborhood. Plus in general, it was too much to process at once - trying to learn to drive and trying to pay attention to my surroundings so i didn't crash. Eventually i gave up. Its nice hearing that others have had trouble but to me it makes me feel like a failure not being able to drive. I can't even say i don't have a car - yes the car they bought for me was sold, but dad's jeep is available for me and my brother to drive as needed.

*sigh* While i'm here...does anyone have advice for my driving issues, too? Like what were everyone else's driving issues when they learned and how did they get passed them? I do need to learn to drive before i graduate college in two or so years...

I'm 20 and I have yet to get my license. I don't like to drive, and I just really don't care about driving much since I don't go anywhere most of the time.

Yes. Took my drivers license 5 years ago, and it took me 2 tries in the mutiple choice test, and 3 tries in the driving test to get my license.

Nope. I was made to start driving when I was 14 and got my license when I was 16, fighting it the whole way. Got both my permit and license the first time I tested, but I nearly failed both because I wasn't into it.
