Taken a few days ago. This is a cypress forest, so the nubs on the ground are cypress knees.

Edit: to add more context, cypress trees only grow knees if they’re near or in water. These didn’t seem to be underwater most of the year, so when I showed my picture to someone who lived in the area and said “this must be a floodplain”, they confirmed that was the case.

Anhinga, also known as snake bird for its long sinuous neck. It hunts fish by walking underwater. It has no oil on its fathers and so cannot fly when it emerges from the water, because its feathers are saturated. Here it is drying its wings on the dock before flying high enough to complete the drying in a safe spot.
