That's pretty much it, and also it's a part of their history - the invention of tinned food. Back in those early days they didn't realise tin was poisonous and and it killed quite a few people before they figured it out and switched to using steel.Maybe because it is a cheap food people were eating when there was a war or bad economical situation, so it reminds them about childhood or something.

A much older traditional poor people's food is one that you will like though I think, proper home made Pea And Ham Soup. Don't buy the tinned stuff though, it's rubbish.
