Just curious about types of psychiatrists

My doctor said to me earlier that she thinks I should see a learning disability psychiatrist instead of my current psychiatrist who isn't a learning disability psychiatrist

What is the difference between learning disability psychiatrist and a normal mental health psychiatrist

Is a learning disability psychiatrist able to detect things that a normal psychiatrist wouldn't be able to?

Never heard of such a thing. There are professionals who may have more knowledge about learning disabilities than others, but I've never heard of a "learning disability psychiatrist".

The best way to find such a psychiatrist, though I doubt very highly they'd be known as a "learning disability psychiatrist", is to build/use your network of support professionals to find a psychiatrist that has experience treating patients with learning disabilities.

Also, it seems strange for a doctor to tell you that you should see a "learning disability psychiatrist", are you sure it wasn't a backhanded insult?

No it wasn't an insult, she can see I'm struggling especially with socializing, I go to a day centre and 2 people im friends with see a learning disability psychiatrist

My doctor said Autism and ADHD affects learning that's why she think I should see one

I cant say I have ever heard of a learning disability psychiatrist. People who's experience primerily lies in that area, I have heard of that. Prehaps it was just a turn of phrase. Different medical establishments/ doctors use different words for the same things.

It’s like any other kind of doctor, or therapist...they can and do specialize in specific things. A specialist is a good thing as they will know and be open to so much more because they have specialized training.
