Inexpensive Cloud Storage Options Other than Google Drive?

I want to find more secure and private version of Google Drive / Onedrive where my privacy is actually respected and the only funds that the company receives is from users' subscriptions, and not selling to data mining companies or AI generation companies (important because I am a writer). Do you guys have any suggestions? I need something that can easily hold up to 100gb of more of backed up files, as well as options to easily store them.

Proton Drive is one option. It's based in Switzerland and that's always nice. Who doesn't like Switzerland. I think it's user-friendly and well-made.

My advice would be to stick to using removable or portable SSDs. And to keep them as multiple backups in a secure location such as a bank's safe deposit box.

Your data isn't truly safe with anyone but yourself. Otherwise if convenience is paramount to you, then you must give up any thought that your data is truly "safe" with any corporate entity. Even business entities with the best of intentions in terms of the sanctity of their customers' data can still be victims of unauthorized intrusions. Then what?

Bottom line: Trust no one. Take a queue from Edward Snowden. He won't even use an operating system unless it boots from a CD like "Tails". It defines the digitally grim world we live in presently. Such things wouldn't be necessary if they weren't truly needed by those seek privacy in earnest. :(

It depends on what sort of usage you want. If it's just simple storage Mediafire are pretty good, and cheap - it's free. Store up to 10 gig and you can share links to files with people if you want to.

Storage and sharing. Text based files don't tend to be huge (at least the ones that I create), so the storage being only 1/10 of the size I'd want wouldn't be as much of an issue. Besides, I could create alt accounts to "expand" storage.

10 gig is just the free account. I don't know what they charge for decent storage but I imagine if they let you have 10 gig for free then it's probably not expensive. I've had a free account there for about 15 years now. It's the most useful way I've found for sharing large files with people.

And on a broader outlook, there's bound to be changes in the cloud system in the coming few years because of the amount of electricity they use and environmental concerns. Which countries have cheaper of more expensive services is going to shift as more and more countries pull back from gas and oil usage.

Solar power is now cheaper than any other form of electricity generation by a huge margin so countries that are investing in solar power should do well. So try not to lock yourself in to one service, keep an eye on the prices as things shift around.
