Hi all,

I have been in a relationship with my 26year old fiance for 4 years, he has been diagnosed with asperger's since he was a young child, but recently, I have been worried about his alcohol consumption and his behaviour towards family when drunk.
Also, I would like to know a few websites that I can look at to read up and understand Asperger's more, as I would like to be able to support him when he needs it.

HI. I just learned about asperger's a couple weeks ago and have spent hours and hours learning everything I can about it becouse I beleive my son has it and that I have it. What I did was just googled whatever terms I wanted to read about such as "asperger's", then in reading I woulld offten come across another term that I wanted to understand and google it such as "asperger's stims". I also googled whatever term and utube such as "asperger's utube", "asperter's relationship utube", asperger's alchahol utube", or google the word and choose video on google. read a lot and watched a lot of videos and learned a lot. That's how I found this Forum. I did learn that asperger's can be inherited so yea a good idea for u to learn about it for that reason also..... Good Luck

Welcome. :)

I find it's easier to be around family when I've been drinking, because I can actually talk to them. If I haven't been drinking, then I just can't open my mouth except for short replies to direct questions, and I also feel guilty because it's my family and I should be able to talk to them. By no means do I have an alcohol issue, it's just that it makes it easier for social situations. And I don't drink to the point where I'm trashed, just tipsy enough to be able to loosen up.

Is your fiance like that, or do you actually think he has a drinking problem?

I dont think he has a drinking problem because he goes weeks without having anything to drink. I've just noticed that when he does drink lately (over Xmas) that he was drinking alot and wasnt the 'normal' person he is when I've seen him inebriated previously.
I've read in a few articles that drink can help him with social atmospheres

It definitely does, lol.

Christmas is a really stressful time, especially for Aspies I think. I know it is for me. Every family function I had, I was drinking. Has he slowed down now that the holidays are over?

Yeah he is trying to stop drinking now, he didnt like how it affected him over Xmas. I'm trying to read up on Asperger's more now, and try to understand him & Asperger's better so I can provide the best support possible.
I'm a Clinical Practitioner at the NHS so will try to get as much info from there I think, and get some advice from his parents
