Too much low calorie Gatorade, I think.

Too much Xbox, I think.

Too much weight in my belly, I think.

It looks ugly but I don't feel much discomfort with the edema in my ankles.

The nurse told me to elevate my feet, get more motion in, drink more plain tap water, consume less salt, monitor the situation.

I don't know if duct taping two LARGE juice cans together
end to end, to roll underfoot while you're seated is specifically
useful for edema, but it is motion, and does exercise the
thigh muscles.

And doesn't cost anything like what those little pedal machines
I see on television do. It's not a violent or difficult movement.

Your nurse is a putz! She probably only had 2 hours of natural health education in her entire college career.

Drink electrolytes to stop the blood from pooling in the extremities. When you consume salt it draws water into the blood vessels, increasing blood volume, so that your blood pressure will be stronger and water will be able to be pumped to other parts of your body and excreted.

Your pulse is most likely very high when you're dealing with edema, as your body is working so hard to get water up into the upper extremities of your body. Consume a little salt. It's medicine for things like this and will lower your pulse and increase your blood volume so your heart won't have to work so hard.

Correct, salt is a necessary electrolyte, however, it is possible to have too much of it. Water follows salt, so the more salt you consume, the more water your body needs to hold on to to dilute the salt in your blood. And if a person has venous insufficiency, the blood will pool in the lower extremities because the veins can't push it back up to the heart. Hence the lower extremity elevation recommendation.

Electrolytes require a delicate balance.
