"I don't get it, therefore it's stupid"

Is anyone else a little fed up with this pattern in neurotypical behaviour of denigrating whatever is incomprehensible to you as a cowardly defense mechanism?

It just makes me so mad sometimes that they NTs can get away with casually dismissing something because they can't understand it, whereas aspies who do that have a communication problem.

For example, one of my scene-starters during drama class utterly confounded my fellow actor, who exclaimed "I didn't get that at all!" and laughed for dear life. I know if they set up a strongly NT scenario, and I cackled and cried "I don't get it!" I'd be subjected to many patronising looks and remarks.

Perhaps to make this thread less aggressive, I could ask if anyone out there believes that having to conquer the incomprehensible on a daily basis makes them more willing to make an effort to understand something before ridiculing it for self-preservation.

Oh, and I do understand that some instances of this are trivial and I shrug them off, but some, like this one in drama, really get to me, and I'm not saying that all NTs are lazy thinkers all of the time.

I definitely agree with you. Most people are NT right, so the majority of the population knows what to expect (somewhat) from someone else, but then when you throw in an Aspie the NT's get confused because we are different. and Since they are the majority, They're point of view and opinion is the 'right' one. I am extremely sick of this as well. If someone 'normal' tries to tell me something and I don't get it they think I'm stupid, but when I try explaining things to people and they do not understand they think I'm stupid. Like what the hell!?

Majorities, throughout history, have espoused all sorts of distorted patently false, dangerous & lethal belief systems. The collective IQ of a group of people sharing some strongly held belief is probably that of a toadstool. When I don't get something, I don't automatically assume that the other person's perspective or idea is bogus. I rethink my own thinking process. Often, I can see where I missed something or, even if I disagree with what they said, I can see how they thought it through & what their opinion is based on.

The Aspie is NOT always wrong: the NT is NOT always right: I don't care how many there are. Any moron can adopt a dismissive attitude. It takes a better brain to think something through or reconsider it.
