I was diagnosed with aspergers last Wednesday, since I was self aware I knew I was different to my siblings and people I went to school with. Prior to my diagnosis I saw many different psychiatrist who said I was depressed anxious and even had paranoid schizophrenia. My son was diagnosed before me with aspergers and it was the people working with him that noticed the similarities in our behaviour, so they made an appointment on my behalf to see someone in adult neurological development, knowing what's wrong with me at least gives me closure and now I can move on I guess.

Hi welcome there are many who were misdiagnosed with other stuff before they found out what really was going on I myself just found out not long ago too.

Hello Drew, welcome to the alien study program. These Earthlings are most unpredictable, they do really stupid things so often :P :)

It does make you wonder what people in the mental health services are thinking when they diagnose a patient. All the information that they are presented with and they go for the easiest answers. I'm just grateful that I have a fantastic wife that accepts and understands me.

That's actually funny stephf I often refer to normals as human and myself to be totally separate from them.

That's great your wife understands, you definitely need that when you are discovering all this.

I also found closure and serenity when I was diagnosed. I have unsuccessfully tried to figure out why that happened, but am content regardless.

welcome.

Me too haha.

I'm new here too, and I've just received a diagnosis this year, I'm in my 30's.

It seems to be fairly common for parents to get a late diagnosis after having their children diagnosed. I suppose this speaks to the strong link between autism and genetics. At least your child will be blessed with a parent who better understands what they are going through.

Thank you, my son is a fantastic lad and my wife and I get him tons of help.[emoji4]
