This just crossed my mind, but I got to thinking that over the years I've had many people slander my condition. At first, when I discovered it, I thought I was the only person on earth that was like this, I was so young and foolish to think that. Maybe that's why I felt so out of place, and how I became an outcast in school.
But still, how can someone deny something's existence if it's staring them right in the face?
Reality is not just what you make of it; if it's able to breath into your face and speak to you, it's real.
My philosophy is this; you know that something is real if it follows this criteria;
1. It is physically tangible, and you can touch, rotate, push, pull and move it somehow.
2. It has some sort of texture, and it feels like that texture.
3. If it is used to apply aggressive force onto something, and it weighs enough weight, it will damage its target somehow, be it alive or inanimate.
4. If it does not move on its own, unless it is a machine, then it cannot simply be a hallucination, unless it is somehow arcane by any definition. (Like, some kind of science experiment or something.)
If an aspie encounters such an opponent as this criteria, and it does not change fast enough for their perception to be destroyed, then they may be able to handle it, because it may be easy to understand, if not at least simple.
But, there are also negative criteria:
1. An object or entity has one appearance upon looking at it, then when turning away and looking back, its appearance changes, with little to no context.
2. An object or entity is recognizable only for a moment's time, then quickly moves out of reach or sight to be analyzed enough.
3. An object or entity somehow changes so fast that its first appearance was not able to be analyzed, but its next appearance is assumed to be its first because the mind's eye only THINKS the first appearance was not its true form. Then THIS appearance changes to one that is different than the first one, but very similar to the one it just had. I like to the refer to this as the "Chesshire Cat Tail Chase Effect".
4. An object or entity only APPEARS to be changing or moving, yet it is simply an optical illusion created by its texture.
If any or all these criteria apply at once, then a panic attack is likely to ensue.
So what's my point?
My point is that this is ammunition for nonbelievers, haters and potential harassers to cause offense, disbelief, or otherwise straddle the patient in some way, shaming them because of how flawed they are.
This is the most inhuman thing that can be done to a defenseless, helpless person that is only trying to fit in.
So, how do you recognize someone who suffers this daily, and how do you communicate with them? More importantly, how do you heal someone whose mind has been wounded and bludgeoned by years, decades even, of treachery and harassment?
I could make a list of things to do or say, but too many people on the internet have beaten me to the punch.
My simple answer is this:
Only when one who is not afflicted is wounded in their mind,
Only when one who does not know constant terror is confronted by the devil himself and he is made their house guest,
Only when you are cut in half by a knife wielded by an unruly deity of boredom,
Only when the sun is suddenly the moon and the sky now scowls upon your torn linen
Will humanity realize, that you cannot clean that which is not soiled.
