Any advice on home schooling 17 yr old son with AS?

I see various ways of getting HS diploma from internet, and also the choice of GED.

First of all, do your homework. My state, Michigan has very lenient (to the point of being a joke) homeschooling laws. What you want to make sure is that area employers will accept a diploma that is granted from one of these internet places. For that you need to ask them, not the prospective school. Schools can and do lie about these things. My sister teaches at a state university and she can tell you stories about students who wish to transfer from the private college down the road who were never told that their credits would not transfer.
 
Although I don't have AS, I was homeschooled when I was 17. Sort of. I actually spent most of my time taking classes at the local community college. I started this my junior year, under a program which allowed high school students to take college-level classes (this was in Texas), given a demonstration of basic reading, writing and math proficiency. I don't think I ever got an official high school diploma, but when I applied to college, I both got in and got financial aid, so I think that taking the college-level classes helped indicate I was ready for, well, college.

I don't know how common these programs are, and since you are in a small town I don't know if you have access to that kind of thing, but that's what I did. What does your son want to do after he finishes high school?

He has expressed interest in game programming or game testing. He has been in a Computer Science class this year. He has an A and is usually the first one done with his work. That teacher is probably the best teacher he has had his entire life. My son had started talking to him, and he hasn't spoken to a teacher since 7th grade.

Did you have to take the TAKS test at any time when you were home schooled? I've seen information stating he has to take the TAKS, and information that says he doesn't.
