I wouldn't go as far as saying I knew exactly; afterall, the term Asperger's had to come from somewhere ;)

But for a while I went self-diagnosed, and later I got an official diagnosis
 
Welcome to AC. You'll find there are a number of us here who are self-diagnosed.

I took a number of months to arrive at this conclusion. It all started by chance, having first learned about Aspergers Syndrome from a National Geographic show on television. I slowly began putting the pieces together and realized after a lifetime of social struggle that at the heart of it all was my neurology and not merely my personality or attitude.

Interesting also to find many people here who were self-diagnosed who went on to get a formal diagnosis and confirm what they knew all along.

I have a similar experience. Not from nat geo but someone I knew was having there son interviewed by a speech pathologist and the way the boy responded reminded me of myself. Im a little concerned I might have to change things in my life. I don't mean my interactions with people. I mean work and professionally. Engaging is hard because my focus is on a bigger picture of non fabrications and logic. Doing jobs and making money does not drive me, and it's frustrating to keep doing things that don't make sense to me simply because I think it's what I'm supposed to do from a sociological viewpoint.
 
I figured it out, did lots of research, then some more, then went in for confirmation and official diagnosis. Welcome aboard

I'm self-diagnosed, and figured it out on my own (with the help of the TV series "House" - episode 'Lines in the Sand'). I pretty much had to, as I'm one of the cases where I appear "too normal" to have AS. Haven't had an official diagnoses yet, but after many months of obsessively researching everything I could find on AS, I'm now 100% certain I have it.
