Hi, Hello

Hi, Hello I'm new to this entire thing. I came here after several different people in my life asked me if I was autistic and after a lot of research and videos, I feel like I might be? I did pretty well in school academically wise but I really struggled with the whole socializing aspect and still do. I get pretty overwhelmed in large groups and essentially go mute, along with other signs that made me question myself. I plan to eventually get assessed, once I either save up or can get insurance that will help cover the cost. But for now I'm going by self-diagnosed, not sure how okay that is?

Hello. Did you try online tests for autism? Some of them are rather accurate.
I have social and general anxiety, so socializing aspect is very hard to me as well very often, and I do have some sensitivities, but except for that I do not fit other ASD criteria. I also lived through some traumas which may have added me some what people would call "autistic traits," but other than that nope.
I passed many autistic tests and all of them told me I am not autistic. Yet autistic people I know who passed the test all got the positive "you're asd" results.

So maybe you should check out those online tests for starters.

Thank you for the advice!

Glad to have you with us, @SharksRCool

This discovery is a positive step. Alot of us fell through the cracks and it's okay. It's good you discovered this now though. A good majority of us have not even considered it, or were truly unaware of it till much later.

To answer your ending question: Yes. That is perfectly fine to go as self-diagnosed. Even if you are unable to get a professional diagnosis. At least you know. You know you better than anyone.

Thank you! Seeing how welcoming you and everyone else so far has been is making me feel so relieved. All I've ever wanted is to find people I can relate to and feel understood by.

Hello and welcome, @SharksRCool

Yes, that’s fine and completely valid. Self-diagnosis is part of the autism journey for a lot of people. When I first joined here, I was self-diagnosed and people on here were just as accepting and validating as they are now that I have a diagnosis, so no worries there.

It looks like you’ve hit the acceptance part of your journey and are now well into the research, learning and discovery parts. Hopefully we can be a resource to help you with that.

Wishing you all the best on your autism journey.
