It's My Birthday!
Im 33 years old with mild autism aspergers and add it will be my 34th birthday in 4 days.

Does anyone here on autism forums own a kite and does there kite help them with their autism. Here is what i read on google -

Kite Flying can be a beneficial and ejoyable activity for individuals on the autism spectrum, often referred to as aspies. The structured, predictable nature of kite flying, coupled with the visual and sensory aspects, can appeal to many individuals with autism.

Welcome! I think I tried to fly a kite once when very young, but kites have not really been a part of my life.

Kite flying, or frankly, most activities that engage the mind and body are good, in general. It seems less about the activity itself, as it is more about avoiding the ruminating thoughts of an otherwise, socially isolated or marginalized individual. There is a tendency to spend a lot of time within our own thoughts, and when there can be low dopamine and serotonin involved, sometimes those thoughts can be rather dark. Best to avoid that. Stay busy.

Periodically, I get the urge to revisit older pastimes, including kite and model rocket flying. As a kid, I made my kites from used newspaper, string, sticks from the yard, and rags from my mom's rag box. I preferred using scotch tape instead of glue, because I could fly the kite right away with the tape, but glue had to dry overnight.

A couple of weeks back, I saw a pre-made kite at WalMart for $1.29 and couldn't resist. I flew it a couple of days later, and was disappointed with the "string" it was more literally heavy thread than actual string.

It’s been a long time since I’ve flown a kite, but I do have fond memories. I made a sled kite when I was a kid using strong paper. It was basic, just plain white with a plane and UK Royal Air Force markings drawn on it and 2 round holes for aerodynamics, but it worked great.

The problem was finding a place to fly it, and way too much wind here. Trying to find a good place to fly and waiting for the wind to be right was too much of a hassle and led to too much disappointment. But it was great fun while it lasted. Should have built a wind turbine instead!

I have fond memories of running on the beach with a kite trailing behind, then that exhilarating moment when the kite takes flight and gleefully watching it rise into the wind. Following that was the calm fascination of watching and feeling it fly.

I do not have a kite, but it sounds interesting. What kind of kite do you have?

Here is a picture of my first flo tail kite =). I love my tie dye flo tail delta premier kite that is 6 feet 1 inches wide and has two 19 feet white tails and middle tail that is 9 feet 4 inches.

I would love to get questions on my kite and comments - Feel free to ask me anything

Thank You Very Much,
Sincerely Gary DuBois

I always desperately wanted to fly a kite when I was younger. I used to make my own sometimes, I'd decorate them with lots of drawings and colors. Unfortunately, I never managed to get one to do anything more than get about 12 feet in the air and then speed directly to the ground. Then it would get tangled in the string. I probably lacked the hand eye coordination when I was younger.

I remember I had a plastic transparent kite when I was about 2-3 years old that had yellow dragons on it and yellow plastic handles. The string got hopelessly tangled and the weird thing I remember when I tried to get my dad to untangle it, he gave up and then kinda tied the kite to my back and wrists like a flying squirrel costume 😸

I think that was probably the most genuine fun I'd managed to have with a kite 😸

My brother and I used to make our own out of paper using cotton as a string. They worked really well though we did need to use a different design that we worked out ourselves.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away my engineer father built this kite for me in a kite flying contest. We won the most interestingly designed kite. He called it a "Tetrahedron".

Sadly it turned out to be the last father-son event I ever had with my father. Too bad I don't have a picture of the largest and smallest kites in the contest. We won those too.

I haven't flown one since I was a kid. I wouldn't mind having a go at it again, but I think I have enough expensive hobbies already that I wouldn't add this on as another one. I think I would be happy just go get a cheap kite for a kid and have a go with that. Good memories there.

Kite flying is the most beautiful stim. I am fascinated with kites, and one of my aspie superpowers is identifying which kite shapes and materials would be good and strong for height, tricks, etc.

Not much calms me more than being out on a grassy hillside for countless hours, flying a kite under a beautiful sky.
