Help understanding what mutually exclusive means

This is something I can’t get my head around. When I see something like “X and X are not mutually exclusive.”, my mind draws a blank on what the person is saying. I’ve been told certain things I worry about are not mutually exclusive but I still don’t get it. Could someone please help me understand what mutually exclusive means?

Mutually exclusive means that the two things can't happen at the same time.

Is "X and X are not mutually exclusive" what you meant to say ?
Or was it "X and Y are not mutually exclusive?

I will try to offer some examples.
X = pretty girl
Y = smart girl

Those two events, X and Y, are not mutually exclusive.
It's possible for a girl to be smart and pretty.

Another example>
X = big black dog
Y = small white cat

X and Y are mutually exclusive.
There is not an animal which can simultaneously be a big black dog AND a small white cat.

Thank you. That makes it easier to understand. I’ve often been told my age and getting a girlfriend aren’t mutually exclusive.

I believe that the statement
"Markness' age and the likelihood of him getting a girlfriend
are not mutually exclusive" is a true statement.

There is no cut-off age after which meeting a person and
befriending them is forbidden.

I suppose my mind tries to make me fear the worst and my unsuccessful record with dating apps and such try to fuel that fear. The odd thing is that I’ve seen young women dating much older men but apparently I can’t approach because I am considered a “creep” for not having a successful dating record.

If its referring to a couple, it means they're open to other relationship possibilities.

Or maybe you’re a creep for being a much older man who approaches younger women? Perhaps start approaching not porn-video girls but women your own age and maturity level.

Please hear me out. I don’t actually approach younger women, I was just speaking hypothetically and wondering why sometimes they go for older men. I would be happy being with someone my age range (30’s).

1. "Daddy issues". The girl who grew up without a strong, supportive male presence in her life. Kind of sad.
2. Gold digger. The girl who is looking for financial security and living a wealthy lifestyle. Statistically speaking, its with the "older" male.
3. As most people mature, they become more secure in themselves and tend to actually act like adults. Most women are not into the "man-child",...the guy who continues to like an immature teenager. Some younger women would just assume skip that whole 20-something, still living with his parents, video-game playing child.

My father gets a lot of the second ones using his status as a doctor even though he’s married and when the young women find out he is seeing other women as well as being married, they get angry. He’ll often say he’s going to break up with his wife but he never does. When he rants about her and says he will break up with her, I just think “Whatever you say, dad.” I won’t do what he does. Even when I was a teen, I saw love as a commitment between two people and cheating was unforgivable. I’ve only had one real relationship but I was totally committed to her.
