Can you figure out the joke based on the picture below?

I don't know... the ape isn't going to "step on the rope"... more likely use his arms... so... in that case, would the rope be cut? If the rope is cut, it falls to the ape's side of the gap.

The fact that this is a joke suggests that I'm missing something rather obvious.
 
1) The rabbit is goaded by the ape, steps out, and cuts the rope on himself.
2) The ape uses the rope to pull the cliffs together, grabs the scissors, and cuts the rabbit out of the storyboard.
3) The ape steps out on the tightrope. The rabbit goes to cut the rope but his scissors have turned to chopsticks.
From far below, the river bed rises to meet the antagonists - but by the time it arrives the rabbit has understood that the ape is really his grandmother.
They all end up sitting together in a large bowl of custard.
 
It is a joke with a fake ending: the rabbit doesn't need to cut the rope if the monkey steps out on it he's a goner whether the rope is cut or not he is headed to the bottom of the canyon--no need for the threat. It's like saying "I'll push you out in front of that truck if you walk in front of it." or "I'll punch you if you stick your face in front of my fist." It's funny because it's a false threat.

According to the spoiler, the rabbit must be on a loose and shifting tectonic plate?
