Grim food thread.

But he's already condemned you to death, and barely time for hearty breakfast, never mind dinner! This guy/gal doc should be struck off! I mean, what's their name? Dr Mengele Jr? Jeez, I'd expect a damn sight more than a free dinner in exchange for my life! Bet the swine want's to do a Burke and Hare on my barely cold corpse and sell it for dissection!
And another thing... <rant rave mutter grumble - THUD! (that's 8 hours! Come in number 11, your time is up! 👼)>

"Bet the swine want's to do a Burke and Hare on my barely cold corpse and sell it for dissection!"

Truth be told... why was he re-checking my organs if I was going to be dead! To his dismay to find out the diagnosis was wrong. The only conclusion: he has relations with the dark side of the market, the wet market!!! It's called "wet" because it's sold before it even gets dry. 😭

That's it, I'm going to jump off of... My hospital bed. Whoever isn't in bed is a visitor.

You do realise a lot of people die in hospital? Hmmm, I'd watch out 'fi were you...

Ah! I see! Not Mengele Jr, but Doctor Lector! It's sweetbread's on the menu then? Or a fine liver ragout?
This last meal is getting, well, out of hand a bit? Are you no longer the guest, but rather the ingredients??

Unacceptable! He has LAUREL CHERRY JUICE on his hands!! (and mushrooms in his pockets) And he's the chef, I shall call patient customer's protection. But my phone is full of MANGO JELLY, oh, the terror, and the charger's not in good hands! I borrowed it to the nurse and she didn't plug it in her phone with care.

It turns out that not everybody retains their appetite on their deathbed. I have a relative in her final stages of dementia that has stopped eating altogether.

My husband's grandmother stopped eating in her final stage of Alzheimer's. I think their brains stop sending/receiving hunger signals and may lose the ability to swallow.

One of the signs the body is shutting down in preparation for death is lack of appetite and no interest in eating. It is not just cutting off the appetite sensors, it is more that the digestive system no longer functions well enough to digest the food. It can cause pain to the terminal patient to force feed. The worst is when they put a feeding tube in. Then the patient lives for ages as a vegetable.

Pushing terminal patients to eat is one of the most common mistakes caregivers make and it drives me crazy.

I was working as a caregiver for a 93 year old lady--she was a pretty happy person. I took her to the pool, the donut shop, go for drives, that kind of place. She LOVED the donut shop. But her adult children didn't want me to take her there or give her any kind of "processed" food, saying it was unhealthy and bad for people. She wasn't diabetic or anything like that, and for 93 was in great health. I always was like: "the woman is 93, let her eat all the donuts and processed food she wants!" I mean it wasn't hurting her. She just loved donuts, so let her get some joy out of that.

My great grandmother lived to 98, she didn't go in to a home until she was 96. Her secret to long life was half a cup of stout twice a day. Of the stout that was all she drank too, it was a medicinal thing for her, if she felt like a few drinks she bought Brandy.

The nurses in the home wouldn't let her have her stout, we used to smuggle it in and hide bottles all over the place for her. Her comment at the time - "They're worried it'll shorten my life.". :)

My grandfather lived until, I think 93....smoked a pack a day until his early 80;s, at times drank a quart of whiskey a day (according to rumor) and when he wasn't he would down a six pack. Drove until he was mid 80's...kept driving even after macular degeneration...we couldn't stop him. Also spent half his days in the garden and had an intense curiosity, grew gigantic squashes. I don't know if our daily habits create longevity as much as attitudes.

Steel-cut oatmeal with black raisins from Turkey, almonds, honey from our alfalfa hive, a little cream from the neighbour's cow, cooked so the oats pop a bit when chewed, served in a bowl made by one of my kids.

Good luck, doc🤭

Stout? Is that a kind of beer?
Yes, black beer. Very strong flavour and rich in iron.

Just stick with Jameson to wash those tacos down. Guess I'll have to have that smuggled into prison.

And you thought Coca-Cola was "the real thang". ;)
